    the balls in steele's court

[ LUKE STEELE has been told he must slash his wages in half if he wants to keep alive his FA Cup dream.

Keeper Steele helped Barnsley to the semi-finals following glory wins over Liverpool and Chelsea.

But he returned to West Brom on Monday after his loan spell came to an end.

Tykes boss Simon Davey wants Steele, 23, to stay at Oakwell — initially on an emergency loan before signing him permanently in the summer.

Albion will allow him to leave on a free.

But Barnsley are not willing to match the £8,000-a-week deal he has with the Baggies.

The Tykes, who have banked £1.7million from their Cup run, are prepared to pay just £4,000 a week.

Davey, whose side must overcome Cardiff at Wembley on April 6 to reach the final, has given Steele 48 hours to decide.

The boss insisted: “If it is not sorted by then, I shall get another keeper.

“It’s up to him. I want Luke but if I don’t get him I’ll go elsewhere.”

Steele said: “Unless both clubs can reach agreement I am going to be watching Barnsley’s semi-final on television.

“It should have been a really simple deal to carry on my loan.

"But I’m running the risk of missing out on the biggest day of my professional career.” ]

seems strange that davey says he has given steele 48 hours to decide and steele says both clubs need to tort it our

    that all sounds pretty logical.....

...though The Sun aren't exactly renowned for their journalistic accuracy. I suppose it all depends what Steele (and his agent) consider to be more important - the very short term (ie the cup semi) plus the possibility of European football next season, or missing out on the cup but possibly getting a much bigger financial deal with a bigger Championship or a Prem club next season. A tricky one from the player's point of view. Although on the grand scale of things, whether it's 4k or 8k a week, it's still far more money than anyone reasonably needs to live a comfortable life imho.

I See where Davey is coming from, but then again isnt Kozzie on 7k a week? so why not hes going to cost us nothing if we can strike a deal. Obviously Davey will be wanting a new keeper anyway whcih wwe may have to pay a couple hundred thousand for plus his wages is another issue. so why not give the lad a contract after all he has deserved it and who knows if it wasnt for Luke we may not been in the semi finals, in all fairness its mainly down to steele we have made this 1.7 million would be nice to give him something back in return.

it doesn't work like that tho...

we would be saving a lot in transfer fees but if you pay Steele 8 grand a week, lots of the other players will want a rise as well...it may upset the rest of the team. It's like any normal job, I've been in a situation where I was getting paid a few grand less a year than one of my colleagues for doing the same job and that pissed me off...it'll be the same for the other barnsley players

Steele has a year left to go on his WBA contract.

The WBA position is clear, and so is the BFC position.

Best solution all round is if the loan is extended without any other conditions.

On the one hand I see where you're coming from mate, but on the other hand, it isn't JUST down to Steele that we're where we are. Many have played their part. Coulson saved us when we seemed to be heading out against Blackpool, Muller made several crucial saves against Southend, Bobby Hassell was IMMENSE in both Liverpool and Chelsea games, Odejayi, Howard, JCR and Kozluk have all also played huge roles in our progress. Do we start paying all of them in line with the top earner at the club whoever that may be? Sadly for a club of our size, a cup run of the magnitude of this season is not a regular enough occurrence for us to start dishing out large contracts off the back of it. Remember Mike Sheron?

Except for West Brom, who may still be lumbered with a 3rd choice keeper on 8k a week at the end of the season, which seems to be what they're worried about. Yep, the chances are they would still be able to let him go to us, but in that case we then wouldn't be under the immediate pressure to thrash out a deal which suits WBA rather than us (large sell-on clause etc etc). Also, from what I understand in any case if we sign him this season we would STILL be looking for another keeper if we happen to play WBA in the final (correct me if I'm wrong here)?

oh yeah VERY good point regarding if we get west brom in the final, so basically it could be a lose-lose situation. If that is the case then we may have to use Letherhan if steele signs as season would be over

    It is not surprising

that teams go bust, when they pay the third choice goalkeeper £8K per week. As for Letheren, I doubt he will make an appearance in the semi. there are many non-cup tied keepers out there.

Steele also stated that it "wasn't about wages".

This is like Call My Bluff.

Steel says its not to do with his wages, barnsley say its not an issue with steele. Sounds to me like maybe its nothing to do with his wages.

Maybe Barnsley don't want to sign him next season? We don't use a sub keeper so maybe simon davey only wants us to have one professional keeper on the books and just loan another if muller gets injured again.
