Nardiello settles Yorkshire battle to put Barnsley through By James Ducker Huddersfield Town 1 Barnsley 3 (Barnsley win 3-2 on agg) TERRY the Terrier was not the only one nursing a deep sense of wounded pride at the Galpharm Stadium last night. The Huddersfield Town mascot was tearing down the touchline, celebrating his team’s equaliser against their bitter Yorkshire rivals, when he was tripped by Chris Shuker, a Barnsley substitute, and sent crashing to the ground. Minutes later, the agony was complete when two goals in quick succession secured Barnsley a place in the Coca-Cola League One play-offs final against Swansea City at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday week. Paul Reid drew Barnsley level on aggregate for a second time before a blunder by Paul Rachubka handed victory to the visiting side, the Huddersfield goalkeeper spilling Brian Power’s shot to allow Danny Nardiello to poke the ball home. The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes after Barnsley supporters somehow managed to arrive late at a ground situated just 20 miles from their own. The omens did not look good for the visiting team, either. Barnsley had lost only two of their previous ten matches, but both of those defeats had come against Huddersfield. This was a tense affair, although Huddersfield seemed to believe that it was better to try to steal a second goal rather than sit back in the hope of preserving the 1-0 advantage garnered in the first leg at Oakwell four days earlier. Andy Booth volleyed over for Huddersfield from just inside the penalty area after being nicely picked out by Danny Schofield, before both goalkeepers were called into action for the first time in the ninth minute. Marc Richards found Nardiello, who in turn slid the ball to Martin Devaney. It was a swift, slick interchange of passes, but Devaney’s shot from a tight angle, while spilt, was easily mopped up by the Huddersfield defence, who broke immediately on the counter-attack. Booth was proving something of a handful and when he fed Schofield, it looked for a moment as if Huddersfield would take the lead, only for Nick Colgan to save confidently with his legs. Huddersfield are desperate to re-establish themselves as a top-30 club by their centenary year in 2008 and there was no doubting their desire or endeavour. But having sampled a season of Premiership football in the 1997-98 campaign — what must seem like an eternity to most associated with the club — Barnsley have lofty ambitions of their own, although it was the home side who seemed the most likely winners before Barnsley got a foothold in the game in the 58th minute. Paul Hayes was clumsily bundled to the ground by Martin McIntosh and, with the coolest of heads, the midfield player picked himself up to roll his penalty into the bottom corner. Within seven minutes, Huddersfield had drawn level. There appeared no imminent danger when the ball was played back to Colgan but, taking too long to clear, the Barnsley goalkeeper was left embarrassed when Jonathan Worthington slid in and managed to deflect the ball into the goal despite a desperate attempt to clear on the line. Andy Ritchie was furious on the sidelines, but the Barnsley manager was not despondent for much longer. Devaney swung in a corner in the 71st minute and Reid, having escaped his marker, steered his header beyond Rachubka to set up a thrilling finale.
