Now if Mel Machin were still in charge.....

....then it's a distinct possibility. Converting players into defenders was one of Mad Mel's favourite hobbies after he went mad. I'm sure we once had about five centre halves on the pitch at once under Mel. Plus Mark Robinson and Julian Broddle who he successfully converted from midfielders into full backs.

    Wasn't that a Bassett trick?

I'm sure we once played 7 defenders in the starting XI. Bolton away maybe.

Appleby and Eaden in midfield - seemed bizarre at the time

Van Der Laan up front against Blackburn?! Utterly unfathomable, both for us and seemingly their defence as we were 4-1 up at half time!

I remember we had seven defenders in one of Bassett's teams at home to Swindon - it was the Wembley season.

We played horribly, and the ground was booing like mad when he brought Geoff Thomas off the bench.

30 seconds later, Thomas had stuck the winner away.

Who were the seven? Eaden, Curtis, Keith Brown, Chettle, Barker....?
