I’ve just had a driving incident and I would like some advice if anyone can give it. I’ll not go into too much detail because people driving dangerously seems to be a regular occurrence. However, I have checked back on my dashcam and noted the registration. Out of curiosity, I have inputted the registration to the DVLA website to check whether it has an MOT. There is apparently no trace of this vehicle on the DVLA website. What should I do? Is there any point in contacting the police? Or would I be wasting my time and theirs?
You'd be wasting your time, because they would have to do something about your report before they could consider it a waste of their time and they won't SYP aren't up to the job.
Have you tried slight variations of the plate? Sometimes they are changed by using duct tape to make the letters appear to be a different one (e.g. changing two Is to a U).
Good point. Looking back at the still I’m not convinced that one of the letters hasn’t been doctored. The footage of the incident is pretty damning but I guess the Police will be deluged with this type of stuff.
You can submit it on Operation Snap. They have a dedicated team for looking at dash cam/phone footage and actively advertise for people to use it. I submitted a video of a woman on the motorway, middle lane hogging whilst on her phone and I got a response within two weeks saying they are going to prosecute her. You don’t need to talk to anyone, just fill the form in, upload the footage and they update you on their findings. You do have to be willing to go to court if needed though.
Was it also an accident, or a verbal exchange. Is there any damage to your vehicle, enough to put an insurance claim in ?. If so, I'm guessing they (ins. co). may request you report it to the police and get a crime no. if the 3rd party fleed the scene. Can't hurt to report your findings though, regardless I'd have thought. It's annoying those that avoid playing by the rules (Mot, tax, insurance) have shoved premiums up enormously.
Report it for a few reasons. Said driver may injure or kill someone. The car may be stolen and on false plates. What’s the use of having a dash cam if you don’t report it.
You should report it. The car might be stolen with false plates and being used in other criminal activity. It most certainly won't be insured.
