Who cares being an hour from Oakwell, plus not as bleak as Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides

  6. Had two weeks in Benbecula once - glorious!

September 1985. sunny, warm, lovely - but for the military presence would have been a paradise island

Spent 18 Months there mid 90's, I loved the place. Not much military there now, I'd love to go back for a visit. You RAF or Army ?

No mate, I'm at Ramstein now, been here 8 weeks and thankfully been picked up. I love Germany, love Ramstein but the job in NATO is awful. So quite pleased to be coming back.

High Wycombe ? it moves so fast now I lose track. I'm at Ramstein a NATO post and dislike it immensely

I'd forgotten about that one, it was wildenrath I was thinking of

we were a year at gutersloh - civvies though

  17. Yes, High Wycombe

Been here since we amalgamated PTC and STC. I moved from Innsworth, hence my GloucesterRed name. Not living there any more but can't be bothered to change the name.
It seemed impossible to squeeze two HQs into one site but it worked and now you wonder what everyone did all those years in two separate locations.
Sign of the times - shrinking Air Force, no need for any more than one Command. Shame though.
I went to Ramstein a couple of times when I was at Rheindahlen in the early 90s. Always thought the Americans were lucky having the best part of Germany (the south) while we had the flat northern plains but I suppose it depends how often you want to get back to the UK. Had I got posted to HQ AAFCE I would have enjoyed the location but probably never got back to UK. Swings and roundabouts I suppose. Bavaria is fantastic though. Have you seen any Kaiserslautern matches?

  19. RAF Germany was......

Until it all started falling apart in 1993:

HQ RAFG - at RAF Rheindhahlen. Joint Headquarters, huge site with all nationalities there
    Wildenrath
    Laarbruch
    Bruggen
    Gutersloh
    Wegberg - nice little hospital
Few people at Gatow in Berlin
Others dotted around the country - Dusseldorf, Ramstein, several other USAF bases

Virtually all come home now. Happy days. Only regret that I only had the one tour at HQRAFG and saw the closing down ceremony.
Sad day at Wildenrath when I was there when they were practically turning off the lights and locking all the doors. It was my job to remove a load of PCs from various offices. This was 1992 I think, and there were not many PCs around then. Lots of typewriters though!
Berlin must have been a terrific posting - wonderful city at that time with all the changes coming about. I wish I had seen it in the 70s and 80s though
