Just heard from a mate who works at the hospital Smith is in, the break is really bad, he's shattered the ankle joint and there is a 50/50 chance they may have to amputate due to the complexity of the dislocation and break, definately looks like his career is over, best wishes to Alan and his family.

    **** me!

Never liked him as a player, always thought he was quite a nasty piece of work but wouldn't wish that type of injury on anyone

    Smith Suffers Massive Injury Blow
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Alan Smith suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle in the defeat against Liverpool.

The combative Yorkshireman landed awkwardly after sliding to block a John Arne Riise shot late in Saturday's tie, and has subsequently gone to hospital.

"It's a bad one alright," Sir Alex told MUTV. "It's a break in the leg and the ligaments have gone obviously and the ankle joint has come right out. He's gone to hospital. It's one of the worst I've seen.

"It's a real bad one and we're all thinking of Alan at this moment in time."

Ferguson was quick to hail the 24-year-old's incredible courage despite the severity of the injury.

"Alan showed the courage he has with the way he accepted it and just put his hand up and waved for the physio right away. He has unbelievable courage," added Sir Alex.

"It's a really bad one and it's going to be a long term injury. But he knows we're completely in support of him.

"The best we can make of the situation is to try and win the Carling Cup for him next week."

I really hope its not that bad

It clearly was a bad injury though, and easy to believe his career is in danger. Here is hoping he makes a full recovery and is able to resume his career sometime next year. Never been my favourite player but always gave 100% and you cant ask for more than than

I don't see how that injury could ever lead to amputation, hope not anyway

    Must have been really bad

'Cos Ferguson said that it was the worst he had ever seen, and Scum were the opposition when David Busst had that career ending break at Coventry. The pictures of that, with his ankle and foot sticking at a right angle to his leg were sickening. If I remember, Peter Schmeichal could not bear to look.
