This speech - by Jimmy Reid - came to my attention today as it was made 50 years ago to the day. Jimmy Reid was a trade unionist and made the speech as the new rector of Glasgow University. He had left school at 15 and did most of his learning in a local library. The speech was hailed by the New York Times as the finest since the Gettysburg Address and is as relevant today as it was back in 1972.
