Shouldn't you have gone for the Nationwide or another mutual rather than a bank? If you were really sticking it to the man.
I like the co-op, their ethos, shop, travel agents. They have a branch near me too. Don't tell me I need to change again?!
Err, is this the same co-op that have bought Britannia and are now trying to buy a bank from Lloyds? You just sold your soul to the devil, and didn't even realise
My main driver was someone who wasn't connected to casino banking. Or kept telling me they were the world's local bank, despite every advert starting 'In China...'
Good choice ark. The coop bank are the only bank who will not lend to ANY country with human rights issues, corrupt governments or any company that does not trade ethically. Furthermore they are the only bank to be "financially secure" in line with the new rules on keeping enough spare capital to cover its bad debts!
The co-op does seem nicer, with its touchy feely adverts and that, but it's still a bank, it's still run for the benefit of the shareholders and it still does all the same **** that the others do. I'm not casting aspersions, we bank with the Halifax who are as bad if not worse than any of them, but if your motivation was to stick it to the man the way to go is to put your money in a mutual.
I used to work for co-op insurance, in those days and i'm pretty sure it hasn't changed, the co-operative movement did not, and i'm pretty sure still does not, have shareholders.
Interesting thread, I know naff all about banks or much at all come to think of it. If I had any money I'd certainly want it to be managed by the lesser of the evils.
I'm with Co-op and never had any problems. Have to get paid into a Barclays account, but when I do I transfer it straight to the co-op account.
Isnt it owned by the members, of which I'm now one? That's what my letter says. For the benefit of its members not profit for shareholders.
It could very well be that I'm talking ballacks. I assumed, because of its bank status, that it was run in accordance with all other banks. If that's not the case then apologies.
It looks like I'm talking ****. Apologies. Serves me right for not checking my facts and talking about summat I know nowt about. From Wiki: "Despite its name, the Co-operative Bank is not itself a true co-operative as it is not owned directly by its members, but by a holding company which is a co-operative—it is wholly owned by Co-operative Banking Group, whose sole shareholder is the member-owned Co-operative Group."
To be fair Jay the onus should really have been on me to know these things seen as its me who's changed to them on the premise of ethical banking! My lack of research is being exposed!
From wiki: 'The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.'
Now join Cooperative energy for your gas and lectric. Sticking it to the man again and members points.
First Direct (part of HSBC) are a superb customer focussed bank. I could never imagine banking with anyone else.
