With his own admission - Patrick was not fully engaged with the running of the club last time we were in the Championship. Under the circumstances that's no fault of his own. But it has to be said that during most of that time Barnsley was anchored to the bottom of the Championship. And as a result many fans just walked away from the club. However, things have definitely changed since Patrick got more involved. Both Doncaster and Sheffield United (seem to?) have far more buying power than what Barnsley has. But when talking to Donny and Sheffield United fans they envy Barnsley because of our board of directors. Patrick Cryne - owner and a true fan of the club. Maurice Watkins - a finger in nearly every sporting pie Barry Taylor - links to the FA Ben Mansford - excellent communicator who knows football All in all a great footballing team of directors that has got us promoted..........remembering that its these guys that appoint the manager. (compare their record to Sheffield United) But now the crunch time is here..........we are in a league now that could be described as Premiership Division 2. We are going to be playing against clubs with far more buying power than Barnsley. As fans we don't want to see a repetition of what happened last time we were in the Championship.........that is to say; a series of failed experiments Although Barnsley doesn't seem to have much money - we do have a great board of directors...........all eyes are now on them....... lets see what they can do
I can see why many local clubs look at the board with envy and it's great to see that at last we have a board that understand football and just as importantly understand the fans. I wouldn't agree though that Doncaster have more buying power than us? I think that our recruitment policy will be copied by many teams in L1 next season and we are likely to see quite a few clubs having a gamble on non league players who have potential. Refreshingly, from the outside looking in, Cryne looks more motivated than ever. There could well be more exciting times ahead for the Reds.
When you take Burnley though as an example of a well run club with a previous limited spending power I think Barnsley are of a similar capacity. The recruitment has to be spot on as financially we don't have too much room for errors in paying wages to even free transfers and paying up contracts take up much required funding. I believe we have a manager if he takes the contract I'm sure will be offered who tactically has shown an ability to read the opposition and who can and will alter throughout the game as dictated by circumstances. I believe if we can repel being picked over and secure some of the resources we had last season owned by other clubs we have the nucleus of a good Championship club. The character and camaraderie was there.
Isn't the club still up for sale? We're more an attractive proposition than we've been in previous years. Would be interesting if say CK Becketts were to join alongside Patrick and put some extra investment into the club.
But in L1 and L2 FFP is strongly binding, meaning that outgoings are intrinsically linked to football related income, not benefactor donations.
How come every player has signed for us when it's been a choice between us and Donny. Wasn't Adam Hammill offered a deal there before signing for us? There are numerous other players in the recent past that have done the same.
What sort f investment would you expect Becketts to put in ???????? To the average working man, they are very wealthy Football terms, there as skint as me n you
Means nowt, you've also missed off Dick Watson on their board who's worth three times more than Cryne. When Ryan was there they had a board wealth of around £750 million, they got a nose bleed sitting mid table in the Championship and couldn't compete with us in terms of wages for Shackell.
There's potentially a big club waiting to happen at Donny - they just need a few years of sustained success to get things moving - because when you look at the size of the place compared to other towns and cities it's got everything going for it
They can't draw support simple as. When they got promoted to the Championship for the first time in 56 years, they struggled to get 10,000 home fans into their new stadium. Former Chairman John Ryan bigged them up calling them a sleeping giant and claiming they were a bigger club than such as Ipswich.Total ******, DRFC could not draw crowds bigger than ours when we were doing nothing much really. Even Ryan eventually realised that they were simply unable to attract the kind of support that a town of that size has the potential to supply.
The feel good factor around the club is unbelievable at the moment, the fans need to trust the board to move us on. let us fans get behind the team and show the rest of this division some passionate diehard Yorkshire supporters COYR`s.
