and all that, surely the FBI and CIA or whoever are shutting them down should be concentrating on other more important things. yeah i know people are losing money and copies of films/software etc are getting spread all over the net, but the companys still make there millions.

Surely they should try tracking pedophiles on the internet and terrorists and other stuff like that, not software copiers or stuff like that.

They just seem to shutting every site down with copies of films.. Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa (old skool), torrentspy and now megaupload.

Yes, because they don't do those things do they?!

Seriously - you think they aren't tracking paedophiles online or terrorists.

I think they are in the business of tracking people breaking the law, now you may disagree with it but software piracy and illegal downloads are against the law. It's an infringement of copyright - it's ok cause they make loads of money anyway? Well, for now, but the problem is getting worse and if more and more people start looking for illegal downloads rather than legitamate sources for watching stuff then it will get worse and funds reduced.
The issue with SOPA was that the legislation was so badly written that it would affect sites such as this one, where one poster puts up a link to an illegal website and this site could have been closed and it'sowners taken to court.

no, i know they do track them but why arent they sorting it out as much as piracy, i know piracy is an issue but i think they should concentrate on bigger problems than this.

if a terrorist site recruits 1,000 muslims they can hurt millions, if a website with final destination (for example) is on and gets 1000 downloads who does it hurt? i just think more money should be pumped into the things that really matter.

The other issue is that they are after people who are not breaking laws in their country, but are breaking laws in America. We've had directors of gambling companies thrown into jail when visiting on holiday, kids who broke a civil law in the UK facing extradition, and they arrested people in NZ.

It's the equivalent of stopping shootings...

...by chopping everyone's hands off. Because hands can be used to fire guns.

Curb piracy by providing inexpensive and desirable film services. Can't afford to do that because the cost of making a film is too expensive? Stop paying lead actors silly money and cut the budget accordingly. Live in the real world. Create products that the consumer can afford. Happens everywhere outside the entertainment industry.

Stop charging fifty plus quid for a console game. Again, if games can't be sold for less, maybe it's time to look at being more realistic with budgets. Independant games tend to be the more innovative anyway.

Ditch record companies and provide inexpensive independant music. The world doesn't need to fund a diva's gold plated bathroom. A polished album can be produced and distributed from somebody's garage/bedroom these days.

Or just blindly censor the internet. Genius.

    More like it :)

The patent to record films was stopping films bring made. Hollywood was set up to circumnavigate that patent. Now they sit in judgement moaning about pirated films. What a bunch of ****. S

Produce products people can afford? Can buy new release DVD's for under a tenner. Legitimate streaming sites for a fiver a month. As for console games for £50, agreed, but development costs are high, having said that though amazon, play etc you usually will find a new release at £35 or wait a few months.

The bottom line is, that if more and more people start illegally downloading then the companies don't get the funds to produce and the quality drops and a vicious circle.

If less people were illegally downloading, companies wouldn't have to charge £50 for a game; they've probably got revenue targets, and because the number of people making illegal copies is going up, the genuine people are having to pay more for the genuine article to help said companies meet targets.

Maybe they're tracking Paedo's and terrorists, they just haven't told you personally that they are.

Downloading music, dvd's, games etc is the same as walking into HMV picking up a few dvd's and walking out again, without paying, 99.9% of people don't do that because there's reprecussions of getting caught. a much higher percentage of people are willing to download things illegally because there's such sites which offer it no strings attached, you're much less likely to get caught, and the punishment doesn't seem as hard.

People see stealing as morally wrong, but if it's stealing via on the internet, it's okay?

You can say they're making money regardless, but who are? Do you think the guy working in the factory where they burn dvd's and games is rolling in it? (I don't know how the process works so it's probably a bad example), as the film industry loses money, it's not the actors who become poorer, it's the little guys at the bottom who lose their jobs.

So you are upset because an illegal activity is being made more difficult?

if I understand you correctly anyway

It seems that your rant is over the fact that you cant steal films and games that have a real value but you want them for free.

maybe you should also say the police shouldnt waste time on shop lifters - the big stores can afford it etc they should only be chasing murderers and Child molesters etc

Sorry but I have no problem with sites whos sole purpose is to break the law being shut down

I have a much bigger problem with sites that may accidentally link to such a site being shut down.

F.A.C.T. normally assert that individuals / organisations engaging in large scale copyright theft are also involved in other (much more serious) criminal activities such as the ones you have listed.

Re: It's the equivalent of stopping shootings...

Must admit I'm now coming from an Australian perspective where discounted DVDs haven't quite hit yet. But yes, those incentives you mention are exactly the right way to go to combat piracy. They have to be proactive rather than desperately trying to protect a business model that no longer works. Piracy may lead to a drop in quality* but similarly, high prices lead to piracy.

Interesting to see the true cost to the industry of piracy anyway. For example, freely downloadable films are breeding a generation of film buffs who would otherwise have seen a small fraction of what they have. How many films did my parents have? About a dozen VHS tapes on the shelf. The modern film literate kids are illegally downloading, regularly going to the multiplex and picking up the odd DVD when the price is right. In other words, the market has never been so big. We live in the media age! Films can be viewed on smartphones, tablets, in-car entertainment, computers and home cinema setups. And still the distributers cry. Okay, let's go back to the 80s and those dozen VHS tapes shall we.

In the end I think a lot of us have no sympathy for publishers and it's their own greed coming back to bite them. Remember, these are the people who sold us an album on vinyl/cassette then charged us again and more for the CD, despite the CD costing less to produce and we'd already paid the artists their rights. This is an industry that heavy handedly uses DRM to punish the legitimate buyer. Upgrade your computer and those DRM protected mp3s and games you paid handsomely for may no longer work.

We can compare piracy to shoplifting 'til we're blue in the face. But what the industry needs to do is take stock of the modern world and adapt to fairer business models.

*An aside: High funding does not lead to quality. Michael Bay is testament to that!

Well said. People who spend lots of time, effort and cash to produce something for others to watch, should not be having their work stollen for free off people who can't be arsed paying.

As someone who has been involved in tackling online crime for nearly 15 years, I can assure you that huge efforts and resources are put into "tracking pedophiles on the internet and terrorists and other stuff like that..." - simple research would lead you to all the major operations that have been succesful down the years. Perhaps not as high profile as these "anti-piracy" operations, but there are extremely dedicated specialists working incredible hours for very little reward on tracking down malware creators, botnet herders, spammers, child abuse image distributors etc. Plus, the average perception is that software/multimedia piracy only hurts the big greedy companies who have 'asked for it'. Whilst I'm not going to comment on their pricing policies, what is often not realised is that down the years piracy has helped fund (in a big way) organised crime and terrorism. The tracking of Kim Schultz (Megaupload) has been going on for years and he is not a pleasant person... when you see how much money he has made out of all this, you can see why organised crime gets interested.

By all means, have a go at the big entertainment companies if you don't like the prices they charge, but don't have a go at the dedicated people who spend their lives trying to enforce legislation that is less than perfect.
