Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the space programme, I think it's interesting, I think we should push the boundaries, and I think it should get coverage, I just don't understand why we've made such a big deal about this guy.

Michael Foale has spent months up in space on both Mir and the ISS. He was the commander of the ISS for a while. He's done space walks and mended the Hubble telescope. As far as astronauts go, he's right up there as one of the main guys. He was born in Louth, raised in Cambridge, went to school in Canterbury and Uni in Cambridge. He has a CBE. He's as English as Yorkshire Pudding. He even went to Uni with Stephen Fry FFS.

I'm not underestimating what Timothy Peake has done, but why is he being heralded as a pioneer?

Difference is, there's now such a thing as 24-hour news, with a hell of a lot of time to fill with content. What better than some guy going into space to fill a fair bit of screen space?

For what it's worth, I disagree about space programmes. We've got enough to sort out down here before needing to plough billions into star gazing in my opinion!!

First in space for 20 years so the first time our kids have seen an English man up there .
24hr news , plus better access and coverage nowadays.

Meh. Helen Sharman was better. Especially when she fell over with the torch at the games. Comedy gold.

what exactly are they doing up there?

Have new planets been discovered and have the experiments they're doing led to any scientific breakthrough?

-- with apologies for the cynicism.

Don't quote me but I've heard that they're trying to Lee Johnston sacked.

Now, it's just a rumour that I've heard so don't shoot the messenger!

They are discovering new planets on a regular basis, and you have at least one scientific invention in your house that came from the space race (Teflon).

Which part? - Actually, I was incorrect about Teflon although NASA using it for heat shields and the like helped to popularize it.

Last year, 715 new planets were discovered.

The timing to spend half a year in space is odd. Like i'm not a big fan of christmas and don't always get along with people I know, but i'd hate missing out on all that to go up into space.

He's a young family too so would imagine with many parents it would be far too hard to leave them behind for so long.
