I'll be able to upgrade my phone in a couple of weeks, not totally sure what phone I'm going to go with although I do fancy a change from the iPhone.

I'm currently with T-Mobile so I would imagine moving to a 4G service with them will be relatively simple. The question is, should I bother?

I realise the 4G network doesn't yet extend to Barnsley but I can't see it being that far off, although to be honest I've generally found 3G to be fast enough - always get a lovely clear stutter free picture on Sky Go and web pages load pretty quickly. As I get my broadband from BT I can use all of their hotspots - there are zillions of them and come in really handy sometimes.

I've always been something of an early adopter when it comes to technology but to be honest that generally means you don't see much of a benefit as there are rarely many useful applications for the technology when it first arrives - that happens once the masses have already moved to it. If I remember right, 3G has been with us for ten years (possibly more) but it's only been in the last 3 or 4 years that it's really been useful.

Be interested to hear what people's experiences are with 4G and if it's a worthwhile consideration - I'm going to be stuck with whatever phone and plan I go with for two years which means it will be 2015 when I upgrade again so even if there isn't much use for it now, is there going to be in the near future?

Also anyone got any advice on which phones to go for (3G or 4G)? Or know of any soon to be released which may be worth considering? I don't want another iPhone and the Galaxy S3 has been out ages now so I'd prefer something that isn't going to be obsolete long before the end of my contract.

I noticed Google have a new phone out which is only about £250 (Nexus 4?) - to me that seems a bit cheap, is this more a budget phone or are Google just trying to sell a load and not making much profit on them?

Don't bother in reality you are looking at 3 to 4 years before it 100% coverage on any network plus it is bloody expensive for 4g service and if you use it for streaming anything you will go through the data limits in days, I would wait a couple of months if you can the galaxy s4 is rumored to be out at the end of march although it could be later, unfortunately there isn't many top phones that launch around this time of year it tends to be Q2 or 3 for bigger phones i.e. iphone and new samsung galaxys

I doubt it will be that long. 4G auction starts in January for 7 new bidders. Expect to see the usual suspects launching 4G services by middle of this year. I wouldn't touch it until then though.
