First of all - profit on a player who is Okay this level....he's certainly not the world beater some folks seem to think he is. More importantly for me, he's not taking a midfielder's place in the starting line up. We need a replacement that isn't McNulty. Not sure about Kennedy. And if Mellis goes next, so be it. Whenever he is in the side we have to compromise somewhere else on the pitch. We have enough midfielders in the squad to be solid and creative, but we need the balance.
im with you fi, i dont think hes the player Flicker was talking about as being the best in the division, however he's certainly not the worst left back we've ever had on the other hand but if we get a decent fee i dont think an already weak defence will miss him
They aren't buying him on this years performances so far , and if we get a decent fee for a player who we are led to believe wants to leave , then it may be the best outcome
I'm not a fan of Goldbourne really. He is okay. But selling him can't be considered a good thing. Flitcroft has played him in every game this season, clearly thinking he is the number one left back/wing back at the club. Now we're are selling him . . . so unless there is another signing in the pipeline, a player is going to replace him who in Flitcroft considers to be not as good. That cannot be a good thing. Do we need the money? Is the wage bill too high?
If we replace him I don't think we'lll miss him at all. He poses no attacking threat at all and Flicker is determined to play him up the field. I don't think the replacement is already at the club though.
In all honesty, I'd rather have Noble Lazarus at left wing back BUT he hasn't played yet this season. Flitcroft must think he's not as good as Goldbourne so we must be either signing someone or he is going to 'weaken' the team.
I'm not too concerned about him leaving. You're right, he poses little attacking threat, as he can't beat his man. If he receives the ball wide left, he'll simply pass it square or more often backwards, as he hasn't the guile to go past his man. As a defender, that's a different matter, but I think it was a poor decision by Flicker to play him as a wing-back. We have the choice of Kennedy/McNulty/ or even Nyatanga at full back, with RNL wing back, as a far greater attacking threat
I think it's a great idea if it's for a decent fee and Flicker does something sensible to replace him....and I don't neccesarly mean bringing someone in from outside the club.
I can't see him being one of our top earners having signed from Exeter where they pay players in cheese.
Depends how much we've got for him I suppose. But from the manager's interview it sounds like he wanted to go. When a player says that, the best thing you can do is agree on a price. No point keeping a player who doesn't want to be here. Kennedy and McNulty can play left back in a back four, so there's no problem there, but if Flitcroft wants to continue playing wing backs there's not many options on the left. We changed the system last season when Golbourne was injured as Flicker didn't fancy Kennedy in that position. RNL had a couple of goes at it and did OK, so maybe we're going with him. Golbourne was OK, but he was no Barnard or Thompson in that left wing back role and I'm not sure I can relate to a player who is first choice in a Championship team and wants to leave to join a League 1 club. Wolves are not assured of promotion this year. Maybe he's not that confident in his own abilities, so didn't think a more successful Championship club would come in for him and chose to take the money rather than continue the upward trajectory of his career. However much money Wolves are paying and whichever way he spins it, he's taken a step back.
I feel strangely indifferent to him leaving. He was good but rarely spectacular. Hope we got a good fee for him mind.
I think he's the sort of solid unspectacular player that you'll only start missing when he's gone. In my opinion he's far superior to the last 2 regular left backs we had - Mceveley & Kozluk and he's a hell of a lot better than Kennedy and any others that might play there (McNulty, RNL Nyatanga etc)
