with the dollar exchange rate being what it is it is much cheaper for some items to purchase from amazon.com in dollars
RE: What about import tax? nt I was mainly looking at CD's which are usually under the limit-larger items may get taxed
Customs duty - this is usually charged as a percentage of the value. The percentage varies depending on the type of goods and their country of origin. Duty is charged on the price paid for the goods including any local sales taxes plus postage, packing and insurance costs. However, postage is excluded from the calculation for duty on gifts sent by post except for Express Mail Service (EMS).
Where the value of gifts is below £290 per consignment a flat rate of duty of 3.5% will be applied, but only if it is to your advantage.
Note: Customs duty will be waived if the amount is less than £7.
so a $30 CD will levy a tax of $1.05 well below the £7 threshold

RE: What about import tax? nt I have used amazon in the US and Canada for items not available here. Only had to pay import tax once on a DVD box set....still was cheaper than an equivalent box set here.
RE: So customs duty starts on £200? nt Aforementioned DVD box set was about £25, got charged about a tenner customs duty
