Why is there such negativity towards Amir Khan in the thread below? I can't inderstand it. Why is he a ****? From what I have seen of him he is a very decent young lad. Very disappointed to see him lose so humiliatingly. But I thought the way he handled the defeat and spoke to the press afterwards was very admirable.
I don't think his driving ban makes him such a bad guy? How many of us have driven at 100mph on a motorway? The Chief Constable of Sout Yorkshire drove at over 100mph on an A road.
But have you ever tried to outrun the cops or knocked someone down on a pedestrian crossing cos you didn't fancy stopping at a red light?
Me neither mate I think he is a true ambasador for the sport and the work he has done with young offenders and developing links between the different communities is fantastic. Losing like that definately questions his ability to become a world champion but doesn't take away from the poistive impact he's made to British life and I can't understand anyone revelling in his defeat
RE: Me neither mate I can't understand why anyone would revel in the defeat of a British athlete but it happens constantly on here.
Fair enough he made a mistake and acting like a bit of prat. Maybe we haven't all kncoked someone down but we have all done things we are not proud of. I still think he is alright.
Definately. For example, not a big fan of Andy Murray as a person but I was screaming like a nutter for him last night. The sad thin with Khan is that I think some people who revelled in his defeat had racial motives
RE: Me neither mate Plus in the other thread people question his loyalty ot Great Britain. He has had some kind of fatwa issued against him by extrmist muslims for wearing the Union Flag, but he stll wears it. He is proud to be Muslim, proud to be from Bolton, and proud to British. I don't think people should knock that!
RE: Me neither mate And proud of his Pakistani heritage and I don't think people should knock him for that either.
I'll give you my point of view as a boxing fan Here we've got a talented British fighter, who given time to develop, could probably become World Champion by the time he gets to his mid to late 20's. Unfortunately, he's believed his own hype, and had the cheek to call out true boxing greats like Manny Pacqiao, Ricky Hatton, etc. despite only ever beating poor, journey men, in his first 20 fights. That's not how to handle yourself when you're still completely unproven, even at domestic level. I didn't want him to lose, in fact I remember going mental in the casino after Coventry away last season when he went 12 rounds with St.Clair, hoping he would become the first man to knock him out, cheering him on all the way. However, he needed to taste defeat for his own good, I just wish it wasn't in the explosive circumstances that happened on Saturday. Now he might start to knuckle down, become a patient boxer, probably go on to win a World title, and even beat Prescott in 2 or 3 years time. The other blessing is that Frank Warren isn't now under the added pressure of trying to make Kahn become the youngest ever British World Champion. I don't want his career to fail, I just wanted him to be knocked down a peg or two as he has no right to think he can mix it in the same league as Guzman, Campbell, Diaz, Hatton and Manny. For the record, now is the perfect time to back him to become a World Champion by the age of 25.
My opinion on Khan is he seems like a decent young man. I watched a programme on him a while ago which showed the boxing club he's opening in Bolton with his own money to give other kids in the area the same oppurtunities he has had. Its not only the money, he's also giving his time to the project which is sometimes more important. Yes he lost badly, his chin has always been questionable but the kid has heart and I hope he does come back stronger and one day realises his dream of becoming a world champ...... One other thing, why the hell did Warren pick a man that has knocked out 17 out 19 fighters, most of them early on. Yes I know to become a world champ you have to fight the best, but Khan is still learning. Most of the time when U pick a replacement fighter U dont pick someone that looks like he's heading for a world title..... Have you seen some of prescotts fights on you tube??? I think he has a big future.....
According to Khan Senior it was Amir who wanted to fight Prescott (so the papers say, so it could be rubbish). Warren could have steered him away from it but what does that say to Khan; "Your not good enough to fight him". I agree that Prescott is on his way to the top, but him and Khan are at similar stages of their careers so should have been a good match. If Khan really does have the ability we are told then he should have put up a better showing. He could have just been unlucky when that first punch landed, but in all his fights he hasn't looked very impressive defensively, always open to shots and he can't afford to be with his terrible chin. I honestly can't see him ever being a proper World champion. He might nick one of the lesser belts at a weight but for him to be talking about Hatton and Pacqiao is madness and his camp shouldn't have allowed those thoughts to enter his head. Just to add that my opinions on him are based purely on his ability as a boxer. I have no problem with his race, upbringing, religion etc. I would love to see him be successful because he is British and genuinely want him to win. Some comments on the other thread are out of order and way wide of the mark. He is as proud as anybody to be British. But it seems to be a general feeling of dislike towards him and that can only be based on factors other than boxing. In the pub I watched the fight, when he was knocked out a group of 5 meatheads starting jumping around shouting "Get down paki", "If he was British he wouldn't be down", "Black B*st*rd" etc, etc. It kind of took me by surprise as I hadn't realised he was disliked like that before. (Just to add, the meatheads were removed from the pub).
Most fighters have a set back in their careers. It's something you expect.
Anyone can have an off day. Even the great Ali had them.
One thing I don't understand is why some of you wanted him to lose.
That's not a very patriotic thing to do.
