From the Grauniad when McCarthy was manager at Wolves. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2011/feb/09/mick-mccarthy-barnsley-wolverhampton-wanderers The picture is from 1981/2 season at QPR, a match I went to on a bitterly cold day when almost all the rest of the fixtures were postponed, this game going ahead because of the plastic pitch. The pitch also being responsible for QPR's goal.
The ball took a wicked bounce off the pitch which Bobby Horn never anticipated if memory serves me right. I was there too. They wouldn't let us stand behind the goal so we sat in the upper tier.
Here you go. Highlights from Match of the Day that evening. Apparently the only game played in London that day, and convenient for the BBC with TV centre just down the road. Lovely to hear Barry Davies again. https://youtu.be/QCYdjf2wFc8
Yes, sitting down was a novel experience for me back then. I think the terrace was covered in frost so was closed for H&S reasons. I think the overnight temperature was something like -15C. Being in London and just about the only game on, it was on Match of the Day.
Brilliant. Thanks for that. Took me back to a place before Sky ruined football. And that team of ours back then was the best we have ever had. That plastic pitch was horrible though.
