Wembley woe for Cardiff City fans

BLUEBIRDS fans are facing a travel headache to get to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final.

Up to 33,000 City fans are expected to make the journey next month – but the game coincides with major work on the Severn Tunnel.

It means that on the weekend of the big match, on April 5 and 6, buses will replace trains between Newport and Bristol Parkway or other services will face long detours via Gloucester.

Fans fear the tunnel closure will lead to chaos.

City fan Matthew Jones, 30, said: “This is typical of our luck. Everyone will want to go on the train and it will be chaos if everyone is jumping on and off buses at Bristol and Newport.

“But hopefully it will be sorted out by then and will all run smoothly on the day.”

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: “This upgrade to the Severn Tunnel was planned more than a year ago and we have been working with the train companies to ensure that the disruption is minimal.

“Many trains are being directed via Gloucester and it might take a bit longer but we should get everyone to London.”

A First Great Western spokesman said: “We don’t yet know what day the game will be on or what time the kick off will be, but as soon as we know these details we will be working on getting extra trains on so that people from Cardiff can get to Wembley.”

Bluebirds fans are expected to be allocated 33,000 tickets for the crunch clash, but exact ticket details will not be decided until Thursday.

An FA spokesman said: “The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6, at Wembley.

“Ticket allocations will be confirmed after discussions have been held with the four clubs. Tickets will be priced at £55, £45, £35 and £25.”

A Cardiff City spokesman said: “Club officials will be travelling to Wembley on Thursday to arrange the ticket allocation and we will announce the details as soon as they are finalised.”

Vince Alm, of Cardiff City’s official supporters’ club, was so confident of City’s success he booked 70 coaches and 100 London hotel rooms a week before the quarter final against Middlesbrough.

He said: “I’m even dragging a few coaches in from Nottingham, so with approximately 50 fans on each coach, and a couple of double deckers, we should have more than 3,500 going to Wembley
