It may be pedantic and thus close to your heart but the ball was put over the line by Nugent and hence he IS the scorer.
RE: It may be pedantic It was going over - in the same way as it wouldn't be an own goal if it was going in and hit a defender. If that goal is given to Nugent then it's ridiculous.
RE: It may be pedantic Why is it??? Ball didn't cross the line, Nugent finished it...... Well done to the lad
it may have been going over but according to the rules of the game the player that gets the last touch is the goalscorer.
I see your point If the ball was going into the net and a defender touched it it wouldn't be an own goal because FIFA would judge the ball to already be destined for the net, unfortunatly they don't view it in the same way when it touches another attacker on its way in.
Great interview he gave on sky, the guy couldn't stop smiling even though it was a virtual tap in from 0.0yds!!!!! Said Defoe was pleased for him, and would have done the same thing. Was only against Andorra but Nugent ran about when he came on, tried to get involved.
Using that principle Ruud Van Tapinroy has scored 1 goal in his professional career id honestly be gutted if i put a bet on for Defoe to score
Definitely Nugent's goal...and so it should be. Nugent's goal, and if any of us were him, we'd have done exactly the same thing. He doesn't know if he'll ever get another game for England...and now he has an England goal.
Looked more lively in 10 minutes than any of our other strikers did all game.

Fair enough In which case we should adopt the Italian principle whereby the last player to touch the ball is credited with the goal, so any deflection off a defender, regardless of if the bal was going into the goal, is given as an own goal.
