Accrington's Andy Holt has made some interesting comments about our owners, the trading of football clubs in response to this podcast that Paul Conway appeared on: https://www.unofficialpartner.com/p...81/e193-rethinking-sport-multi-club-ownership Not sure if all of that is valid given the current model being employed at Barnsley but its a worry for sure.
Can't argue with his POV. We couldn't get into Derby County territory could we, with the moving of our players to other clubs?
Interesting what he says about building Accrington a community asset because our owners haven't been able to do that for us. Funnily enough go down to the stadium plans section........ https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/sport/football/news/key-revelations-huddersfield-town-fans-21536490 Huddersfield have many of the same issues as us. The Football club owner wants control of the ground to make it a seven days a week venue, but have to deal with the council who own part of it.
I can't see the problem. If they sell the club presumably it will be to someone with more money than them for them to make a profit. I doubt that will be Tesco. I wouldn't get my knickers in a knot.
I for one, am less than happy with where things are heading. Maybe I'm being paranoid, maybe this is creeping death. Increasingly worried we're gonna end up part of Franchise FC
Football as a community asset v football as a business will always have conflicting priorities. The simple fact is that football is a business, and operates within the entertainment industry, and their KPI is how they perform in the league. As long as the owners aren't risking the future of the club by operating unsustainably I am prepared to accept that. If I was more interested in the community aspect then I would go watch Penistone or Worsbrough or Athersley, because those clubs are always going to be closer to their local areas and communities.
Well it could be a bit of an issue if it was someone who loses interest like the ones who bought Wigan or Bury?
There is no problem because we are the top dog of the clubs they own. But if they buy a bigger club than us problems might arise from us no longer being their main priority.
We, like many clubs are complete hostages to fortune. We have no mega rich local philnthropists who are rooted in the club to fund us so we have to accept whoever owns us with our fingers crossed or go for fan ownership which would probably limit us to 3rd tier level at best.
That's why independant regulation is needed. Every club is a takeover from the wrong person away from oblivion. I don't know much about what happened at Bury, but Wigan's owner should've been forced to honour the budgets he'd signed off on, rather than just being able to pull the plug.
He has a point - BUT - not every provincial town with a football club has a wealthy fan who wants to buy that club & run it to grow it and benefit the wider community. Beggars/Choosers scenario. The slack governance of football in England, allied with the skewed financial rewards in The Prem make it attractive to foreign ownership and/or 'non traditional' modes of operation.
I might be misreading your point, but I personally felt exactly the same last season, when we were smashing teams and reaching the play offs
A very interesting listen. As always he'll get slammed on here, but, for me, in the absence of an Andy Holt (great owner) we have an ownership who have a plan and who are clear in how to achieve it. We're sustainable and co-ordinated. OK - we're part of a group but has that really brought any disadvantages to us?
He starts off talking about our ownership but drifts off elsewhere. He's a great owner, nearly always like to hear his point of view, but fairly recently I find him to reject any other model for running a football club other than his own. If he had the money, inclination, and interest, I'm sure he'd buy a lower league club elsewhere and do something that isn't too dissimilar to us. Interestingly though, we haven't signed a single player from any of our teams. Only moved out some of the U23s. So the impact it has on Barnsley FC right now is pretty much nil. Unless I'm completing missing the point (which is likely).
It seems to me a bit racist - Glazers are American therefore all American owners are rapacious c u next tuesdays kind of thinking. We appear to be one of the few clubs who play by the ffp rules, every club indulges in dodgy transfers as far as I can tell, based on mates agents of the manager, owner, etc. Intra-club transfers is nothing special when compared with the corruption that does exist.
Nothing stopping him doing the same if he had the money and the inclination. He's just whining as far as I'm concerned. Sour grapes.
