I dont particularly LIKE Andy Murray as a person (or hate him either,i'm indifferent) but it always makes me laugh that people mock them for never being the absolute best in the world. Do people really think that being ranked the second third or fourth best at something in the entire WORLD is such a bad thing and makes them such a failure in life? 7 billion people in the world and being in the top five at something. I'd settle for that to be honest. Christ, im not even in the top 5 barnsley fans at tennis.
That's what British or more specifically English sporting fans tend to do. When a youngster breaks through, he's lavished with praise, hyped up as the next big thing. He's the saviour, the messiah. Then his fantastic talent proves to be not quite enough to rank him above the best in the world and suddenly he's useless, over-hyped, a has-been. Similar story to Rooney in football and even Butterfield to an extent at Barnsley. People seem eager to proclaim sportsmen as either 'awesome' or 'rubbish', not allowing them to just be very good. Re Murray in particular, I thought he did brilliantly. He's ranked 4th in the world, and if we are to consider him 'ours' due to the British category, then I personally am happy with him. He lost to possibly the best ever tennis talent, but he was at least in the final. Nadal wasn't, neither was Djokovic. And USA's and Australia's best were nowhere to be seen.
