REDS boss Andy Ritchie gave his thoughts ahead of tomorrow's clash with Oldham Athletic.

He said: "Matt Carbon is fit and will be ok tomorrow. If he becomes sore again after the game then we may have to go into the market to get someone in on loan. We have made some enquiries this week and there are one or two defenders who we can get in but they are all young lads and I want some experience if I am being honest.

"It would be silly just to bring someone in if Matt is over his soreness problem. If it becomes something more than that then we will have to look at it. We cannot recall Tony Vaughan because I wanted him to go out and get some games under his belt and we did not envisage these kinds of injury and suspension problems.

"Paul Reid is fine although he looks like a centre half now with a broken nose and everybody else is fine. Stephen McPhail is getting better; Richard Kell is doing some more physical training and moving in the right direction and Brian Howard is fine but we will have to wait and see whether he has 90 minutes in him.

"We have been short of goals lately and that is something to think about. Daniel Nardiello has done ok when he has come on; Marc Richards has looked lively so we have something to consider overnight. I have had the strikers in for a talk this morning and we have been through what I believe we are not doing. We have worked through things on the training field as well and there are things we have lacked in the last few matches.

"Oldham Athletic were a massive part of my life and I think I was there as a player, coach and manager for 13 and a half seasons. A big part of me and a big piece of my heart is in Oldham but that all goes out of the window tomorrow. I will be trying with all my heart to get a result against them.

"Oldham will be a difficult side to beat tomorrow and they will be well organised. They have experience in there and that is something we are lacking at times. They have the experienced players in to drag you through when things are not going particularly well.

"Ronnie Moore was given a bit of money to spend in the summer and was able to bring in a lot of players. Everybody knows what the situation is here and we are not flush with cash. We have to pay £150,000 for Paul Hayes and that is a hell of a lot of money for this football club. We have to run things as a business and as a tight ship - I have done that before and had no money whatsoever at Oldham. In three and a half years as manager I think I spent £60,000. We have a little more than that here and wages are not too bad but we were quoted £300,000 for a League Two striker before deadline day and we simply do not have that kind of cash to throw about".

He added: "Oldham's days of playing in the Premiership are well gone and honestly I think they are gone for this club as well. The finances needed are too heady to get that kind of success nowadays unless you have someone with a bottomless pit who will just throw money at it.

"I think supporters have to be realistic and they may not like me for saying it but clubs like Oldham, Barnsley and others have to be sensible about what they can achieve.

"I strongly believe that I can get Barnsley into the division higher and that is a realistic aim because of the way football is nowadays. It would be very difficult for a team like Barnsley or Oldham to get back into the Premiership".

He said: "I was surprised at the mistakes we made at Bristol. When we looked at the game afterwards we were never troubled by Bristol until the first goal. Granted we did not trouble them and that is something we have to address but they did not make inroads into us.

"We defended well but then had a a slip where we left one lad completely free and he scored with a great finish; we gave a penalty away and if you touch someone in the box and they go down then you are going to be penalised; the third one was something I have only seen happen at circuses. You cannot legislate for that and you cannot put a session in on the training ground for what happened. It just flabbergasts you.

"I think Bristol has one shot in the second half. We had three good chances which brought a save but people do not see that. People do not analyse things the way we do. You can say that Bristol took their feet off the pedal but we still had to up our game and we did that.

"We had a great chance to go fourth in the table and we blew it through a bit of indiscipline and another factor against Doncaster. We have to regroup and get back to playing good football. We have shown that we can open up teams easily and we have to get back to that".

He added: "We will not have a problem at all next week in goal. Nick has been called up but has spoken with Brian Kerr and will join up on Sunday.

"Scott is going on Wednesday but will be back here to be on the bench on Saturday. He will then rejoin England and hopefully be involved against Holland on Sunday".

Knock Ridsdale for his financial folly

but he made things happen in the transfer market. I dont think a manager should be left to fend for himself in the transfer market, the Chairman has an important role to play. Ridsdale's record speaks for itself. All I hear about is tried and failed these days.

How right you are Jay. Personally Richie is a clone from the Hart era. Seems a soft touch by the players, praises them, when he should be giving them a ballocking, and cannot condone them for their antics on the field. It's an easy life for a player at Oakwell these days, Andy's in charge and we can do what the hell we want, and f*ck the managment.:)
