We are delighted to announce the signing of central defender Angus MacDonald who has today signed a two-year contract at Oakwell. After beating off competition from rival clubs, Angus joins the Reds from Torquay United for an undisclosed fee and will link up with the first team ahead of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season. At just 23-years-old, the 6’ 3” tall defender already has an abundance of experience in the game with over 100 career appearances to his name. Since progressing through the Reading FC academy, Winchester born MacDonald’s technical and defensive abilities have seen him gain international recognition within the England setup. The Reds latest summer signing has been capped at England Under 16 and Under 19 level, before going on to play for the England C team on two occasions. Angus has followed a very similar journey to Reds defensive lynchpin Marc Roberts, who also joined the Club from non-league having made appearances for the England C side. MacDonald is also no stranger to Football League action having enjoyed successful loan spells with AFC Wimbledon and Torquay (when they were in League Two) during the 2012/13 season, making 21 league appearances in total. After watching the defender for an extended period, the Reds coaching staff see a lot of potential in the dynamic central defender. Reds Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom commented, “He’s a player I’ve been keeping a close eye on for some time now, and I am delighted to bring him to Oakwell. Our squad is young and hungry, and Angus fits that mould perfectly. He will be re-joining League football and I can see his desire to learn quickly with us. He will help the side in an area I felt we needed to reinforce and I want to get him involved with the squad as quickly as possible. It’s now down to Angus to show us that he has what it takes to make the step up and put himself in contention.” On securing a move to Oakwell, MacDonald said, “I’m delighted to join such a big Club and I have to thank Paul Heckingbottom for giving me this chance. It’s a great move for me and a change of lifestyle, as well as club, but it’s one that I’m really looking forward to. As soon as I knew of the interest from Barnsley, it was a no brainer for me and I jumped at the chance. I’m relishing the challenge of playing with and against such high profile and established players, and I can’t wait to meet the lads and get out onto the training pitch.” Read more at http://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/ar...ald-is-a-red-3221463.aspx#W7qKb2bA4ftZHQPM.99
Just checked his youth career.... Reading! Pah. It's not Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal. So doubt he'll be any good. Straight on the naughty list. Especially if other fans take to him and he starts winning awards and getting us promoted. Boooo. Personally have loved these signings over the last couple of years. Roberts, Winnall, Hourihane and Mawson all made the step up look easy. Slightly bigger one for MacDonald but if Hecky rates him I'd say he has a better than average chance of making it!
Why is it that we always "beat off numerous clubs" for (players name here) and that (manager's name here) "had had his eye on (players name here) "for some time"?
Welcome Angus, hope you are of the same 'herd' as Robbo in who's similar path you are treading. Surely some good AC/DC based chants for this lad?
His mate was an Aberdeen cloakroom attendant. Angus McCoitup. Coat on and already out of the door.... Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
