Thanks for sharing. How anyone can abuse a dog is beyond me. Such an act of betrayal.

Sounds very similar to our dog Sable

A very young German Shepherd. When we got her from a dog rescue centre, she was very, very nervous of us. However, this went off the scale when she saw my son Christopher. She lay on the ground whimpering and wincing, obviously expecting to be attacked by him. Christopher absolutely loves animals in general and dogs in particular and it really distressed him to receive such a reaction from her. Gradually, we were able to show her she had nothing to fear from us and would only receiving love, care and attention. Christopher especially wanted to show her that the fear and terror she had for young men was misplaced with him, replaced with love & loyalty.
The turn round we've had with her has been extremely fulfilling. Our patience and care has been returned from Sable ten fold with her loyalty, love, fun and sheer happiness.
However, she does have a habit of strutting round the house every time Germany beat England!:D

Re: Sounds very similar to our dog Sable

Both of our two current dogs (springer spaniels) are rescue dogs, and in the case of our second one, we were told by the RSPCA only that he was amongst a multitude of animals rescued from a woman and the woman in question from whom he was rescued was sent to prison, although he was not part of the case that was put forward. He was extremely nervous for a long time, and not at all fussy, preferring to keep his distance, but slowly he has come out of his shell and is now very affectionate, which is so rewarding when you take into account what a change around it has taken for him to show such affection.

I am glad really that I don't know more about his past, because all I can think is that it takes a bad case of animal cruelty to get someone sent down - even pretty bad cases often only result in a banning order.

    All the dogs we've had

Have come from rescue centres or the RSPCA. For me, if you're prepared to show the necessary patience, the dog returns the love & affection in bucket loads and make wonderful pets.

    It's true, old mate

Just ask barnsley66. He was up at Casa De Big Lil watching all the England games during the last World Cup. After the Germans had humiliated us, Sable was strutting round the house & garden. We saw it. The copius amounts of red wine we drank didn't affect our judgement in any way whatsoever!:D
