Trial road closures act as working model for proposed Town Hall Square area

A TRIAL closure of certain roads surrounding Barnsley Town Hall will allow council officers to monitor traffic flows in preparation for the possible Town Hall Square improvements.
As part of the public realm project to enhance areas of Barnsley town centre, there is a plan to make the area in front of the town hall a shared public space.
The trial will act as a working model to demonstrate how vehicle flows will operate if the plans go ahead.
On Sunday, 1 March, automatic number plate recognition cameras will be set up at strategic locations around town as part of an origin and destination count. These cameras are solely to monitor traffic flow for data collection.
From Sunday, 8 March, Regent Street will be narrowed and the left turn into County Way blocked off. Traffic will still be able to emerge from County Way back onto Regent Street.
From Sunday, 22 March, Church Street will also be closed for two weeks. Through-routes will be signed, although there will be no signed diversion routes.
The trial ends on Sunday, 5 April, when the regular routes through town will be resumed.
A number of town centre businesses have been consulted about the proposed trial to allow them to make alternative arrangements for deliveries.
Road users will be able to call a helpline for information and advice throughout the trial period – 01226 773555. People can also leave comments and feedback on this line or by emailing roads@barnsley.gov.uk Cabinet Spokesperson for Development, Cllr Bill Newman, said: “We need the cooperation of road users during this trial period, and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. I urge anyone with any observations or comments to use the helpline.
“The public realm improvements to the Town Hall Square area will benefit the whole town, but we need to make sure it will work before pressing ahead.”

Last modified on 20/2/2009

hope it will stop boy racers going round in cirlces on an evening. Maybe they will find something constructive to do?
On the subject of town centre I didn't realising they were knocking the Old Mill Lane tech building down!
Trial? Oh aye. The one-way system down Regent Street, on Eldon Street and up Market Hill was a 6-month trial. About 30 years ago.
Once they'd set it up they just never bothered to put it back.

Getting rid of t' one -way system might help.
Dunt effect me anyroad. Wi all t' pain in t' arse of the roads an parking these days I just walk darn Tarn.

RE: Supposed to be moving onto a new site tis true though - although they've started the clearout of the asbestos from the old building, thus making it inhabitable, so no going back, they haven't received confirmation of funding for the replacement as the funding council has put a stop on all new build funding until a review has taken place. lots of colleges are in a similar position - wakefield have just had to postpone their new build for a year as they won't logistically be able to sort out moving everyone out in time for this year by the time the review is done. other colleges already have the diggers on site and don't know if they will get the money to pay them. And I thought the government was supposed to be putting more money in to public sector spending to keep the economy moving - especially the building trade. Or is that just what they say in the paper? Or was that before they threw more money at the banks?
Barmy idea - typical of Council They ruined the town centre in the 70's putting up all that pebble-dash ***** on May Day green all round where WH Smiths and the market is. They ripped the guts out of Barnsley town centre at that time. And that new bus station/railway station monstrosity they've put up - it's like being in rainbow land, it's grotesque, no architectural merit at all for me. Best bits of tarn centre for me are Church Street, Regent Street & Market Hill. The rest? those bonehead councillors fecked it all up good and proper
That's my walking route into town It's very pleasant to along Church Street - but not sure what will happen on the Barnsley College Site. I hope it's not going to be surroounded by "chipboard fencing" for the next 18 months. As it happens, I love the new bus station.
