Hoy, Pendleton, Trott, Dressage team, Dempsey in sailing and Yorkie Brownlee brothers in Triathlon. Come on GB.
Both were injured though so no surprise - gutted for Sayers she was a real medal prospect until she crocked herself in the last meeting before the games having just thrown some pretty good throws - good enough to beat most of her fellow medal contenders
An amazing evening. Was really chuffed for Grabarz. I was in the upper tier at the end where he was jumping from and the reaction from the crowd every time he went to prepare was incredible. Even when warming up and doing practice jumps the cheers were insanely loud. I've got to say... we've done a hell of a job. The way the Olympic Park is set up, the facilities, access, directions and everything is really well done but the stars of the show are the "games makers"... witty, friendly, making people smile, telling jokes, helpful. Brilliant job and makes you proud to be British.
Glad you enjoyed it, sounds like there was a lot shouting Grab arse. Would you class that as your best experience crowd wise at a sporting event?
I'm trying to think of other things I've been to aside from Barnsley games. I've seen a fair few games at Wembley (old and new) and tests, ODI's and T20 games at the Oval and Lords. I think it probably was the best you know. Obviously its not the same as the intensity of a dramatic football game and the ebbs and flow of how that can change. This was like a wave of hope and positivity. Every athlete appreciated no matter what their nationality. I had some Canadians behind me, some guys who I think were Iranian cheering on the Discus thrower (Habbidi?) an Estonian, Czechs, Russians, Swedes. It was amazing and such camaraderie. Outside the ground i noticed a female russian athlete who turned out to be with her coach. (6ft 3 and blonde! The athlete... not the coach). My gf tried taking a "subtle" pic and after we'd passed them the coach shouted us back. Got the athlete to pose with us (I'm 5ft 11 and got dwarfed by her!) and took a pic. No idea who she was but it was a lovely gesture (if anyone knows who she was... do say!). Some are saying there are around 200,000 in the park with all the events and the volume of people is similar to walking up and down Wembley way for a big game. Massive volume of people all expectant and hopeful but good natured and enjoying it all. You get random cheers from inside venues echoing outside. Ennis was being interviewed at Park Live and the cheers of around 30,000 in and around the area was astonishing. Same seeing screens of cycling success and huge cheers going up. Hoy on the big screen in the Olympic Stadium winning gold and a ground not even quarter full at the time giving a huge cheer. I've never been to any sporting event where there hasn't been any nerves from fans and nothing but hope. You find yourself congratulating German Discus throwers and laughing with them as they celebrate by jumping the hurdles set up for the womens 100m final. Congratulating Australians, applauding Americans and willing the underdog on to finish faster, to jump higher, to throw further. The other thing to note. Is the type of noise. It's high pitched. Almost shrill. Completely different to what you get at football or rugby. It just feels good. So often at football there is angst and negativity and its a hostile crowd quick to be disruptive and keen to criticise and destroy. This was something special and you almost felt like everyone who was lucky to be there felt that responsibility to do their bit and add to the atmosphere. I can't even imagine what it must have been like the night we won 3 golds!
Cheers for that, I`m quite jealous and feel as if I have missed out on summat special. Sounds like it might take you a while to come down from that high your on at the mo.
So high i was joining in with the "games makers" leading "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands!" Oh my.... I am a happy clapper!!!!
The athletics crowd are absolutely fantastic Cheering home the two women home from Palestine & Saudi Arabia, for example, despite them being miles behind the other athletes. These fans appreciate just how significant it is for the women simply to be competing and, for me, they're displaying the true spirit of the Olympics. The crowds are a huge factor in making these Olympics the success they are.
