The boyshave won the Mercury Music Award- but Alex Turner summed it up " Dial 999 Richard Hawley's been robbed". Probably scariest TV moment of the year when Tom Yorke turned to the canera for the first time. That boy's face could curdle milk from 100 yards.
That's why it doesn't surprise me Have a look at some of the past winners that have disappeared into obscurity.
RE: That's why it doesn't surprise me how can you say they are rubbish?? ok singing might not be alex turners strong point but lyriclly and musically they are top notch..they won because their album is THE album of the year so far
RE: That's why it doesn't surprise me I'd agree that lyrically they're interesting but no more so than say, Jarvis Cocker.
RE: That's why it doesn't surprise me Actually I didn't say they were rubbish….but now you mention it - they won because they've been hyped to ****. "musically they are top notch" - they are just thrashing their instruments, that does not constitute musicianship. I'm pleased they won it though because it just goes to confirm what I've always thought about awards presented by the industry.
RE: That's why it doesn't surprise me like who? Only Anthony and the johnsons haven't had mainstream success
Is this the classic... ..."they're succesful so I must dislike them" attitude? The album is a very good album and easily relates to my generation with the lyrics. The music is not the best, but Al Turner seemed to write about everything in a under 25's life which is why it is succesful and probably why you can't relate to it. I don't think they will last long as there new material is not a patch on the old, but they're good live and I'll always list the album in my top ten just for the memories it will bring back. They are getting everything they deserve as they championed a new way of distributing musc which has changed music forever, something which should be applauded as they started taking the power away from the record companies. People now tell them what we want to hear, not the other way round. Rant Over.
RE: That's why it doesn't surprise me Good point....Pulp, Primal Scream, Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, M People, Badly Drawn Boy, Suede etc. All previous winners, all achieved at least a reasonable degree of success after their awards.
On the contrary The Mercurys have a tradition of awarding bands that haven't been hyped to ****. That probably accounts for why half disappear to oblivion.
The fact that they won it after selling millions of albums makes it even more of an achievement. Made up for em.
You're thinking of the Brits, which are awarded to "artists" like James Blunt and the Spice Girls who are talentless but nonetheless make record companies a stinking load of cash.

'seemed to write about everything in an under 25's life' i.e. goin on a night out in Sheffield. I mean, I've got nowt against them really, but i find their album hard going. By the time you get to songs about bouncers and gettin taxis it starts to feel like they're a parody of themselves. If they don't get a bit of lyrical and musical diversity the inevitable backlash could be on its way soon. see also Kaiser Chiefs.
