What a classy town indeed...... Well done Mr Houghton..... You have done the town proud during your so called stewardship. Not
[ hmmm you blame him ? if people did not want to buy from greggs it would not exist ....................sadly the town is full of fat people you blame mr houghton ? i blame the lack of investment in the area , not his fault
The lack of investment in the area IS his and the councils fault, we have had a distinct lack of anything worthwhile being lured into the area for years, I work in Donny and it pains me to say it but the town there has been transformed over the period our council has been doing nothing but talk about redevelopment. They have the new frenchgate which includes a debenhams store and other big name retailers, they have the airport, lakeside, and the large clutch of retail units down Wheatley hall road together with the dozen or so car dealerships, and the town itself has far more life in it than Barnsley town centre. The people charged with encouraging investment into Barnsley in my eyes have clearly failed. The ironic thing is the only development the council did back was the gateway plaza which they ended up bailing out by taking up the office space that couldn't be sold...backed the wrong horse there. Thd problem is the council has relied too much on public money from the govt to provide jobs themselves in the area and that is why we are hardest hit when the govt cuts hit home. What they should have been doing is working hard to encourage private investmdnt, money and jobs into the area. Bottom line they have been sat on their hands for too long and now we see the outcome.
Something is certainly wrong somewhere. After all we are strategically one of the best located towns in the entire country and with the low cost of property and land there shouldn't be an issue attracting private enterprise to the area. With all the unemployment around here you would also assume there is a ready and willing workforce champing at the bit to get themselves and the town going again So why hasn't it happened? The council have to accept some or most of the blame in my opinion, as it is it their job to develop the town.
Should try Huddersfield. We have four Greggs which is the same number of Ladbrokes our town centre also has.
At least greggs does well and is investing in the town and providing jobs! Better than another charity shop - loved shopping in Barnsley in the 70's - lost a lot of it's character. Strike did affect the town but the high rates the council charges is hardly helping! Mum used to work at BHS - huge shop that was thriving - never see anything like that again. Needs a lot if investment ... It is possible. Liverpool has undergone a massive change over the last few years and the city centre is booming.
We have two on the same stretch of street with a Pound Bakery between them that's only been open a few weeks. The newest Greggs that opened the other week also is upmarket by Greggs standards as you can sit down in there with your sausage roll as there is lots of seating.
tbh liverpool has a lot more happening than barnsley, we just have mostly residents and the odd tourist to provide for wheras liverpool has a vibrant tourist trade with the beatles tour, two premiere league football teams, an airport, docks including the cruise and ferry tourists etc. i don't think we doing as bad as rotherham but meadowhall takes most ot our trade and it all goes to sheffield's economy. its amn uphill struggle especially in current fiscal times.
Liverpool was in a bad way a few years ago ... Invest and people will come. They used to come from all over to go to the markets in Barnsley - a lot wouldn't even cross the road to go there now
I agree and think that we need to go back to being known as a market town, but take the market up a level. When the continental market comes to town the place is packed. I also agree about Liverpool. When I moved there in the 80s it was a sh!thole, but the last few times I've been back it looks like a different place. It's true though that it helps having the attractions like the Beatles heritage, the docks/river and 2 premiership football teams to bring tourists there. Hence my thought that we need to have something that stands us apart from Leeds, Sheffield, Meadowhall and Donny, i.e. there's no point trying to build shopping centres unless they can compete with those places, so lets build a market of the quality that will bring people to the town.
