It's a must for old gits like me who like to have a wallow every now and then in a bit of nostalgia. For example, it's thirty seven years ago today (THIRTY SEVEN!) since we beat Plymouth 3-1 at Home Park. We'd been rubbish for most of the game before Mike Lester scored a brilliant equalising goal to make it 1-1. Argyle could hardly get the the ball off us for the remainder of the match and we won comfortably 3-1 (Riley & Glavin got the other goals). We won our next two away games as well, 1-0 at both Portsmouth & Exeter (Glyn Riley got the winner on both occasions). Ah, those were the days. Travelling the length of the country to stand on open terraces, watching such a talented, winning team. https://twitter.com/bfc_memories?lang=en
Goodness - that long ago! I was working in Le Havre and came over and returned on the night car ferry. Happy days.
Bloody hell.....37 years ago, that makes me feel well old I was there that day and it's still one of my most fondly remembered away days. Caught the football special train at about 6 am and got back into Barnsley about midnight if I remember right. Terrific last half hour where we tore Plymouth apart at will. What a side that was...... I also went to the Pompey game you refer to which was a bit of a dull struggle if I remember correctly. The day was more memorable for being held back on the open end at Fratton Park for what seemed like an eternity while they cleared the streets of angry Pompey fans. We still had a half brick come hurtling through the window though. Not the most pleasant ground I ever visited......
Young, free & single, no responsibilities, lots of spare time after work, plenty of disposable income. But I appreciated just what a fortunate position I was in at the time.
Wasn't that the game /year ( portsmouth) where the portsmouth fans chased the supporters bus in a car waving knives and making cut throat jestures at us ?
Don't know about that as I was on the train. Wouldn't surprise me tho......it was a pretty rough place to visit back then.
In those days, it didn’t matter who we played or where - we expected to win! And we took an incredible away following pretty much everywhere. You try telling the young people of today that. They’d never believe you.
Most memorable game for me was the fa cup replay against enfield at white hart lane watched by 36,000 I think glavin scored 2 what a side that was used to follow em all over superb team.
Was anyone behind the goal who saw the copper show a West ham badge before he jumped into the crowd? We'd already been treated like cattle just by queuing outside. Give the copper his due though - he was brave. Thing is, there was no trouble going on.
I remember bobby horn making a world class save away at Portsmouth- downward header. I was 12 and had no idea how he saved it.
Remember that leeds game well. I've grown up surrounded by dirty leeds fans, and for years they took the piss. When we were coming up through the divisions they said we'd still never play at the same level as them, yet here we were and they were nervous. It was the start of many a good Saturday night out, giving them stick when we'd beaten them, home or away. The only time they've really had the upper hand was when they had the money. We even sent them back to the premier league with their tails between their legs, having done the double over them, and being the only team to win at Elland Road that season. I always fancy us against leeds. For the most part they don't like playing us, and it shows.
I'll never forget the grin on Ronnie's face as he tapped into the empty net for the clincher at Home Park. Or the convoy of cars with red and white scarves out of the windows after we more or less secured promotion at Portsmouth. What a fabulous time that was to be a Reds fan.
Still my favourite era watching the Reds, even including the Prem promotion side. What a great side we had between 1980 and 82 before Aylott left and it started to break up.
How bad was McCarthy in that game? Gifted Butterworth a chance he should have buried and then at fault for the goal, l'm only 5 mins in..
I think that was one of Macca's least effective games for us. However, he was still a hundred times the player the useless ****** alongside him, Don Souter, would ever be.
I started watching 84/85 so l never got to see him play, from what I've heard that games very un-McCarthy like! You can also hear the monkey chants for Campbell when he goes down for the penalty, nothing much changes with Leeds. Noticed Gwyn Thomas & Kenny Burns playing for Leeds, later of course to sign for us.
