hi all, my old laptop is running incredibly slowly to the point where I just want to wipe it and start from scratch, however I cant find the backup CD with Windows etc on. Its been used for downloading torrents etc in the past and assume has become riddled with viruses etc.

Is there any free software out there that would enable me to rid it of everything and "start from scratch" ...or any other better ideas to get it back up to speed?

    cheers

Just stick Ubuntu on it, miles quicker than Windows on mine.

Ive just checked that model number and as pompey red says, on the boot screen that's displays the emachines logo when you first turn on the computer you can hold down the Alt key (next to the space key) and press F10 repeatedly until the built in recovery kicks in. Make sure you backup any important files before you start the process though as they will be deleted as the hard drive will be formatted.

Only way this will not work is if at anytime in the past the hard drive has been reformatted and the recovery partition deleted.

You don't need a recovery disk for windows 7. You can restore to factory settings. Here's a video:

    Back everything up first.
