Cracking fans! Met a few in Edinburgh last year before the Hibs game. Would definitely travel up for a friendly like that
Went to the hearts game last summer with them, they are a top bunch of lads and the atmosphere they generate is amazing.
Me too. Ive kept in contact with one and hoping to meet up again at this years friendlies in uk. Be amazin if they could get them up for a game! Never been in an away end like it! Awesome they were.
I often thought it would be nice to have a link with them, a friendly each year and alternate the venue, one year here then the following season in antwerp, makes a change from the usual crap fixtures we get
They are top lads - They come to about a dozen of our games every season, home and away. For the home games they make a weekend of it and stay over at the Hoyle Mill. They often travel with us on the Rising Sun and one of the lads had some Barnsley/Antwerp badges made, such is the bond between us.
After what happened when we tried to have a foreign home friendly last summer I doubt Rowing will bother trying to arrange another. Nice thought though.
Do what i've done - email the club and show your support for this fixture Might not come to anything but at least it makes it known.
scratch that! ive just seen an email ive got back from The Don "Unfortunately Antwerp are seeking a match on the 8th /9th August and as we are playing Bradford City on the 11th August we are therefore unable to accommodate them." Damn shame! If we didnt have Bradford we might have gottent that fixture. Bugger.
At least the club seem aware of the bond. Did the Antwerp lads go to Saints away? Can remember one or two Antwerp shirts in our end...
the Royal Antwrep chariman has been asked about anda he said he would into it, that was a couple of years ago , tbh the gino and the boys are not that bothered about playing us as they would have split loyalties the love both Barnsley and RA
As a kid I used to love any pre season friendly against opposition from outside the Football League. For example, we once played an African team called Hearts Of Oak, who we beat 10-1. Then we played Tel Aviv (a 2-1 victory) and turned out in a blue strip because our opponents had only brought a red kit with them. There was also a match against Gudja United from Malta, who we beat 16-0! Games against the likes of IFK Gothenburg, Santos, Ferencvaros seem the exception, rather than the rule, these days. I even enjoyed seeing us play Queen Of The South a couple of times, but those games appear to be a thing of the past.
Re: As a kid I enjoyed the trip to Hibernian last summer, even though it was called off, because it is out of the norm. friendlies against Bradford and Donny arent very appetissing, the rotherham one will be ok because of the new ground. We need some more imagination when making pre-season games.
I know I'm a miserable, old bugger I'd just like to see someone a bit different down at Oakwell. I don't have a problem with local away games, but (as an example) I'd have liked to have seen a home game against Hibernian.
Gino - hes the guy that wears the white jacket aint he? The antwerp fans have even got a song for him!
