I attempted to reformat an Advent PC we have at home using the supplied recovery disc, but everytime I ran the disc, the PC would restart after getting to 73% (the same every time)

Now the disc does seem to have a scratch on it - wish I assume is the problem - but I thought I'd ask the opinion of others before I make my next move.

I've been told I could go to PC World and use their cd restoration method (although the nearest PC world is an hour away or so).

Or I could buy a new recovery disc at between £25 and £35 (which, if it isn't a problem with the disc, would be a waste of money)

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    not an expert but

if you are reformatting why not use the Windows XP disc and boot from that-or don't you have one?

Try copying the offending disc, it often works and then if it fails then you need to format and install using an xp disk and the number off the case of your computer.

Thats not a bad idea actually

I also have the windows XP disc, but because there was a problem with sound devices before reformatting, I'n unsure whether itll be fixed by running the XP disc, but at least it should get the PC up and running again

Just get the sound drivers from the net, it may well be Avance or Realtek. not difficult to find, i would actually try using the recovery disks for the system to search for drivers, if they are not compressed or right where the scratch is then it should pick them up........ let me know what the system number etc is and i will let you kmow what sound chip it uses

I'm not sure if its drivers. It said before that no audio device was installed. Could this be a driver problem or maybe a lack of a sound card? Although surely a new pc would always come with a sound card?

Ill check all the numbers when Im home from work

More likely to be drivers as it will have onboard sound. If you have 3 or 6 jack plug sockets on the back then you have onboard sound, speakers normally go in the green socket.
