I've been getting an error message when I plug in my external hard drive, it's telling me I need to re-format it, though it was working perfectly yesterday.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do? I'd be gutted at the prospect of losing my entire digital music collection!

Are you using a Windows computer? If so:

1). Reboot your computer with it disconnected then reconnect it. See what happens.
2). Try to run disk checker (chkdsk) on it - it might be corrupt.

Try those and see what happens. Then either:

    a). Start thinking about backups
b). Be glad you already have backsup in place...

You could also try system restore to put your computer's settings back a few days. I had an internet prob a few weeks ago and used system restore and the issue resolved
