The front brakes on my mountain bike are making a right racket. When breaking, they seem very "keen" and the noise they make is like a car horn.

There doesn't seem to be any real adjustment on them, any ideas what is wrong?

The back brakes are seem fine....

    Thanks,
    Stephen

It sounds like it's a problem with your brakes mate.

    That's what I was thinking

Would it help if I disconnected them?

They are slowing the bike down and making it difficult to pedal (just like those down at the gym)....

    in my very inexperienced eye

it could be the cable that's too tight.

try loosening that off a little maybe

That's what I'd do. You should disconnect the back ones as well to be sure.
