in the 78/79 season? If so, also who won it in 68/69 and each year before that? as many as anybody knows would be very helpful. TIA
fantastic thanks. that explains the gap in my stats then. however, I had McCarthy winning it in 78 as well? is that true? here's what i have: 1995/1996 Arjan De Zeeuw 1994/1995 Danny Wilson 1993/1994 Neil Redfearn 1992/1993 Gary Fleming 1991/1992 Mark Smith 1990/1991 Brendan O'Connell 1989/1990 Steve Agnew 1988/1989 Paul Furtcher 1987/1988 Paul Cross 1986/1987 Stuart Gray 1985/1986 Clive Baker 1984/1985 Clive Baker 1983/1984 Andy Rhodes 1982/1983 Ronnie Glavin 1981/1982 Trevor Aylott 1980/1981 Mick McCarthy 1979/1980 Ronnie Glavin 1978/1979 1977/1978 Mick McCarthy 1976/1977 Brian Joicey 1975/1976 Kenny Brown 1974/1975 Bobby Doyle 1973/1974 Mick Butler 1972/1973 Eric Winstanley 1971/1972 Barry Murphy 1970/1971 Les Lea 1969/1970 Johnny Evans
Some of the those that have won it this century are an embarrassment to that list. Hugo Colace. Good grief.
At the end of the 78/79 season, when we got promoted from the Fourth Division, there were four runaway leaders of the POTY poll. Allan Clarke, Alan Little, Derek Bell and Mick McCarthy were in contention. The trophy went to McCarthy for the second successive year, with Little coming second. I know all this for certain because I happen to have my scrapbooks and programmes going right back to the 1960s all over my living room floor at the moment and I have just read the Chronicle piece reporting the promotion celebrations. This was a tremendous season all round, and there were over 21,000 in the ground to see us beat Grimsby in the last home game. We finished fourth to go up - top four were Reading, Grimsby, Wimbledon, Barnsley. Happy days!!
