Would you say it's too early to be getting wasps flying around? I've had 2 in my house in the last week.

As I've not had my windows open as it's too damn cold & not had my doors open for any longer than it takes to get in or out, I'm a little concerned I might have a nest of the evil little buggers somewhere.

Are they actually wasps or masonary bees

We get bees often come down chimney at this time of year.

The weather is also mild so some insects are flying early, I even saw a butterfly today

I've not changed the settings on my heating

For ages. Either in terms of how warm it is or how often the radiators come on.

I've got someone coming to have a look on Tuesday though, just to check if there is a nest.

I gather wasp grubs are rather popular with fishermen. Does anyone fancy a nest? :D

RE: You may have a nest

And in that case you need to contact the council or local pest control people.

If they have a next probably in the loft or somewhere near ventilation into the house.

If you can find the next, you could try spraying it but I would not recommend without the correct chemicals and protective suits

Chlorpyrifos based products would probably be the best option, but they can be a little unpleasant

    Absolutely hate wasps

So there's no way I'd even think about doing it myself, even if I could get up into the loft.

no necessary a nest the queens hibernate so at the first sign of warmer weather they will come out of the hibernation. They could also be scout wasps looking for somewhere to start building a nest just kill em and have done should be fine from there on.

If they are building a nest block the route and job done

    Yep

Had one recently. I think these are the ones that don't die in the winter and come out a bit groggy in a mild spell. They tend to be big lumbering barsteds cos theyve got all last year's weight on them.

Don't think it signifies anything special. Should be easy to clout with the Chronicle.

    In that case then

The 2 queens I've had so far have picked the wrong place to try & colonise. I've given them both a good dose of insect killer! :D
