I did it for just less than a year before my job got in the way and I really enjoyed it. Excellent for fitness, but unless you're starting at less than ten years of age, it is not really an effective system of self-defence (you need to be extremely flexible in order to execute the kicks with proper technique and power) and you'd might be better off looking at something more simple like chinese Wing Chun or a Japanese grappling style like Jutitsu. Another important factor is the teacher. If, like me, you want to enjoy it and have a bit of a laugh at the same time, you need to find a teacher who has a sense of humour, and not one who claims he is a former world champion who intends to train killing machines! Oh, and avoid Shotokan Karate, which is a bit like Taekwondo, only a poor version with no contact (boring).
RE: Fancied trying kendo Taekwando ia also a Countdown Conundrum... Wat donkey? Or maybe Toe wanka? Do I win a milky bar?
one in Sheffield give it a try-I stopped after aminor injury and then life took over and I didn't restart-it can be addictive-I was practicing 4 nights a week at one stage!
http://www.doshinkenyukai-kendo.org.uk/

Used to many years ago, but not flexible enough now. Do jujitsu now, which is ten times more painful but doesn't require me to be able to do the splits and stuff.
