Cos I actually do like to walk, just not to Oakwell when that time can be much better spent having a jar in Groggers!
I'm a keen fell walker currently doing the Wainwrights... unfortunately I use maps and a compass... errr what's GPS when it's at home ? (It's an age thing}
I'm round everyday! Got to watch the brass though pal cos I've lost a couple of days wages & I've booked to take our lass away next week
Software on the PC, it's my father in laws Garmin Etrex H, just the cheap yellow one. Android would be good as well though, I've got a Galaxy S2 & been looking for summat on that instead of buying a Garmin of my own
I am not sure if it will work the way you want , but I used this to convert to Garmin from GPS http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input
Have a look at MMTracker for the Android. I've got lots of 25k map areas using that. The evaluation model is free and the full version a few quid. http://sites.google.com/site/mmtrackerinfo/
Have a look at this page , it gives you some ideas http://www.walkingworld.com/Articles/Site-stuff/Mapping---GPS-files.aspx try the easygps one
No I dont know of any free software - havent you got access to the original software used to put the gpx onto the PC I've only ever done it using memorymap but thats not free - the ability comes with the maps of course You cant get a demo licence temporarily of one of the map softwares can you? I suspect its unusual to have a gps and some gpx files and no mapping software
Bit of a thread hijack but hey. Our walking group is looking to expand membership http://www.dvwg.org.uk/ We're having a beer or 3 at The Meadows (Brewsters) near Cortonwood tomorrow night, if anyone fancies bobbing along to say hello. Anytime from 7 - we'll try and make ourselves easy to find.
I've found some software on Garmin website called Basecamp, it's exactly what I need but it doesn't allow be to click 'Send To' it's greyed out for some reason. I haven't got the software cos it's the father in laws GPS & he forgot to bring it over the Pennines with him. I won't be seeing him again before we go to Shropshire
