I've done the unthinkable and left Barnsley in favour of York. My Mrs seems to think it's nicer. Don't see it myself Wondered if there were any York Tykes that wanted to set up a clique
Been to roast pork today racing....terrible afternoon! But seriously, far superior place to live in than tarn. Wise choice Mr G Ally. Enjoy Hth
Just got back from a day trip to York - first time I've been in years and was very impressed. Your missus has taste. If work would allow, I would fancy living there myself.
I was based in York (Strensall) for a while when I was in the Army and I think its a lovely place, wouldn't mind living there myself. Oh but I did meet my first wife there so there are some downsides to it.
Lived in York from '88 to '04, officially at least. Never thought I'd leave but have only been back a couple of times since, which I find hard to explain. It's a cracking place to live.
Just been shifted a bit further up the road to Yarm so registered on here tonight to keep in touch and overcome sense of displacement. Lived away before but this is permanent and looks like work, kids and the rest of it are going to severely restrict trips back for a while so signed up to live the dream vicariously for the time being. Given a 40 year addiction/attendance, the withdrawal has really kicked in with the start of the season and I'm devouring all reports and highlights, forming views of a team and individuals I am yet to see play live! Blighted by North East versions of Look North/Calendar and a Boro wife making noises about the Riverside, but still confident that the kids will grow up Reds and talk reight n'all. Absence has definitely made the heart grow fonder and more fanatical and good to know there are others not so very far away in a similar predicament.
Went to university in York - fantastic place to live. An unbelievable range of top pubs, so I reckon you'll have a decent time even if you don't manage to set up a supporters' club.
Never lived there in order to leave, dear chap. Grew up in Pontefract but escaped the bloody prison. As a counter-argument, someone described York as the "pseudo-medieval fast food capital of the western world" when I lived there which I remember finding quite apposite at the time. And you have to develop an ambivalence towards loud, drunken revellers and meandering tourists. Oh, and give up on the idea of doing actual shopping anywhere near the city centre towards Christmas. Personally, although I greatly enjoyed my time there and I've got a move coming up in the next few years, York (or at least the city itself) is not even on the long list.
Glad to hear it! I'm a lawyer so split between Teesside and Newcastle most of the time. Yarm was as far as I could bear being away from Tarn. Still, it's a nice spot and but for the distance from Oakwell settling in fine. You Yarm based?
Yep, I live in York Gally. Always good to go for a pint with a Barnsley fan! Let me know where you're living and if you want any restaurant/pub tips
Yep,been here since 97. Hotelier, firstly at Crathorne Hall hence why we ended up here. Great place, family all still in Barnsley, distance is ok
