Depends if it's in the horrible Brits abroad bit or the quiet bit. The quiet bit is lovely as always the nasty bit is like Blackpool on speed.
Yep, that sums it up Went to Aghios Nikolaos a few years back and had a very chilled couple of weeks. Mad hot, mind. We hired a car and went on tour. Knossos good and Samaria Gorge lovely if you like a long walk (take decent footwear) Couldn't drive fast enough through Malia, though. Drunk 18-30 type crowd on hired quadbikes - not my cup of tea at all.
Beautiful country and well worth a visit as long as you avoid Malia (unless you're a chav). We stayed in Rethymnon which has a lovely square harbour that featured in one of the James Bond movies. We drove up to Georgopolis, which is reminiscent of a wild west town but has a beautiful beach with shallow water for about 1/4 of a mile. Because we went in May there was still snow on the mountains to our left, felt like driving through Switzerland on one side with the Cote d'Azur on the other. Chania is the old capital and also worth a visit - the Cretians love the British because of how we fought alongside them during the war.
Went to a hotel near Hersonissios and its was utterly *****! Full of ignorant obnoxious Russia *******s........went to Malia for the night, it was very lively and full of young English lads and lasses.....a seem to think some on here have never been 18 before! Get yourself to Rhodes instead, Lindos to be precise, stunning place
Went to Elounda about 10 years ago now and ventured to Ag Nik which is just a few miles round the headland so benefitted from two resorts in one. Very hot, quiet but with plenty of restarants (Ag Nik more developed). Crystal clear waters and had a day trip to Delos, an island supposedly untouched with ruins from the days of the greek gods. Avoid the 18-30 resorts, and Crete has some beautiful areas, as does most of Greece
Echo what Revvie and SDF say...we went to Aghios Nikolaos quite a few years ago had a great time...friendly people good prices , although I've heard they've caught up now. Great food and Metaxa 5 star..couldn't go wrong. We hired a car and drove around a bit..went to see Knossos..which is awesome , visited one or two archaeological sites including a Roman harbour which is now inland and a town they were excavating up in the mountains. Heraklion the capital is supposed to be worth visiting but we only saw the airport...only downside , it was the hottest place I've ever been . The car we hired was supposed to be a hardtop Subaru..I really wanted a softop which was a bit dearer , on the day we picked it up the hire place said sorry the hardtops are all out but you can have the soft (actually no top) top for the same price...I was chuffed till we got out in it..we stopped for a drink and couldn't get back in the car the seats and steering wheel were hot enough to fry eggs on. I looked a right berk driving along holding the steering wheel wrapped in paper and sat on five layers of Greek newspaper.
Been to Crete and Rhodes. Borh nice but rhodes is better for me. Lovely place. Unfortunatley the russians seem to have bought the whole of greece and its islands
I've been to stalis just up from Malia five or six times and love it there... Far enough away from Malia you can enjoy yourself and call up if you want a walk up beach road to see what's going on. Not many Russians in that part that I've noticed it's mainly Greek and English holiday makers.
went to chania last year, lovely town and picturesque but was too expensive for me though, horrible vile yanks who could make us in magga look like angels! brit war memorial there, nazis won that battle but nowt for them? nice place but only the once for me, rhodes in june ;-)
I went before the Russian invasion of Europe. I've heard they've infiltrated lots of places including Thailand, Egypt and Greece. All I hear is how obnoxious and arrogant they all are. Rhodes is good as well, been about 5 times.
I have family in the chania area and yes it's more expensive than eastern crete. The resorts/villages west of chania see predominantly scandinavian tourists so naturally prices are higher ( they pay a tenner a pint at home so the greeks charge them a fiver in platanias). Outside of this area prices are similar to what we would pay at home however. Further there is a german war cemetary, it's just off the main road at maleme.
Interesting about Stalis. Me and my mates went in '88. Malia still hadn't become mainstream - Ag Nik was 'the' clubbing place. But Malia was still damned good, everything closed at 12 when the coppers stood in the street and blew a whistle to signal the end of the night. The walk back down the dusty coast road back to Stalis was great and Stalis itself was small, unassuming, great beach and a great base. Went back to same place in Stalis with my now Mrs in '92 - that was still great, the walk to Malia was still great, and Malia had started to grow and had changed unbelievably. fast forward to 2015, we took the kids all-inclusive. Hired a car and for old-times sake I went to find Stalis. Couldn't believe how it had changed. It was bigger an livelier than the original Malia, but I couldn't believe all the building work that had been done on the beach side of the road. Sacrilidge - that was one amazing beach back in the day. Similar in Malia - the beach facing the little island seemed little more than a sandpit this time around. And all you could here was BOOM< BOOM< BOOM form every cafe, kebab shop and ghetto blaster. You could even hear it over the millions of buggys, quad bikes, mopeds etc that were flying about all over the place. Our old 'local' in Malia - Galaxy Bar - was still going, but it was just lost in a sea of clubs, hotels, bars and cheap restaurants. I'd go back to Crete - love it - especially driving inland to the traditional parts. And I'd consider Stalis, but **** me I couldn't do Malia again. Old? Moi?
