i have just booked the family holiday to sharm el sheik in egypt, has anyone been and if so what did you think? maybe i should have waited for some responses before booking (chinny)
Dont get dragged into the shops dont make eye contact, be polite shake your head, say know.... definately dont browse or you will be held prisoner until you part wi more cash than you thought. Scam is to add up you goods adding in most expensive item twice. Very good at it so unless you really want something dont bother
Been twice - once in September 05 and once in March 06 and really enjoyed it. For a relaxing holiday, I would say it would be difficult to beat. More or less guaranteed hot weather - 40c+ in mid September although a bit cooler in March. The sea is excellent and if you're into snorkelling it is difficult to beat anywhere else in the world. I would strongly urge you to only drink bottled water - even in the hotel. All of our party of four had dodgy stomachs at one time or another in the first holiday because we weren't too careful. The prices are cheap and there are some good bargains to be had. Make sure you've got loads of water for the coach transfer and try and take plenty of food/water for the return trip 'coz the airport WAS pretty crap - although a new terminal should now be ready. Have fun - and the approach on landing is fantastic so try and get a window seat. HTH, Steve (nodding2fingers)
I've been to Taba Heights Which is further up the coast near Israel, some good advice on tripadvisor.com forums, drink bottled water, wash your hands after handling their money(its filthy),take dollar bills for tipping which is expected
Been down the Nile and to Luxor, excellent, and found the people in shops to be great, they expect you to barter, although if you do handle the goods then they do expect you to be buying. Though on one occasion just walking away got them to come right down in price.
Sharm el sheik..... Like many things in life it depends on what you are after. Personally, I like a nice relaxing holiday, mainly sea and sand with a little bit of driving to other resorts/attractions. Nice meals and restraunts are also high on the list............What I dont like is being hassled by Shop Owners and Resteraunt Owners every time you get within eye shot.....and this is where Sharm comes into its own! - with arguably some of the most agressive propriators you are ever likely to encounter. I ended up paying £5 for some shaving cream at the end of my holisay as I really hadn't got the energy to barter over such a piddly amount. There was a few good resteruants although nothing special. What it did lack is 'Englishy' type bars - which again I know are not to everyones liking - but you will be buggered if you can find Sky Sports anywhere. There is a bar called 'Camel bar' - very original!" - which ain't bad but other than that you are slumming it with the locals......personally, would recomemnd anyone going, to book a top class hotel and don't ventutre out as the hotels over there are superb.
