I'm going over next month for a couple of weeks and we've booked a camper van to drive up the Gold Coast. Just wondering I've seen this international driving permit mentioned, do I need it or can I just use my usual driving license as proof? Cheers sithi. You reds.
Went to Sydney when I was 14 to visit my Aunty and Uncle. Loved it. That said the Barnsley to Bristol road trip is very similar to the Gold Coast. Especially the motorway around Birmingham.
Yep. Me, my sis and two other mates drove from Sydney, up the Gold Coast, and back. Was a great trip, in spite of the spare tyre in the hire care not being the right size, and a broken windscreen. Stopped at Port Maquirie, (fairly dull) coffs Harbour, (must have been good cos i cant remember), Byron bay ... Full of ageing hippies/ washed up rock stars. Surfers Paradise, (full of under age drinkers), Brisbane (we chose to give drinking a miss in Brisbane, and still ended up in hospital ... Accident with a ceiling fan!) , Noosa ... My favourite just a lovely surf type place ... Not over commercialised back then at least. Hervey Bay... A bit grotty, and then Fraser Island .. A bit over rated but worth a visit. Great memories. Loved Sydney.
bout ten hours sydney to gold coast non stop.... but you'd do a few overnight stays.... South West Rocks, Scotts Head, Coffs harbour, Byron Bay, maybe... lotsa places really... Have a bit of a crawl round the Rocks in syd one night... do it sunday afternoon and catch some irish music in the Mercantile. Have a look at the Northern Beaches. There is a camping site at Narrabeen. Have a look at Bondi, but spend time at Manly on the Northern Beaches.
Here you go mate: As a visitor, you may drive in Australia on a valid UK driving licence, which covers the class of vehicle you use. You must carry your licence when driving, in addition to a valid passport. An international driving permit is not sufficient and must be accompanied by a separate valid driving licence. There is an on-the-spot fine for not having your licence with you. Ensure that you are adequately covered for insurance purposes, including if you borrow a car from a friend or relative. not sure if an international permit is mandatory, but even if you do have one you must carry your uk licence, and as far as i know as a visitor you must carry your passport. what size motorhome have you booked?, your uk licence must cover you for it
I'm flying out to Brisbane, 2 nights there to meet a mate and then 3 of us fly to Sydney. 4 nights there and then a week driving back. We're booked in at sites in Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Byron Bay and finally Tweeds Heads before back in Brisbane for 2 nights. Not that excited...
To be fair it's massive - http://www.gallivantingoz.com.au/images/kea6berth_van2_large.jpg Not seen anything on the hire company's site to say a certain license is needed though.
The Rocks! Fantastic down there. We always used to go in O Malleys and the Kings Cross Hotel, but I guess that's what all the back packers do.
reason i'm on about size is that if you passed you test after 1997(i think) you cant drive above 3500kg on your licence.
its for definate that dyson,i own a motorhome heavier than 3500kg thats why i know about the weight limit.. us older ones got auto entitlement for class3,they havnt done it for some time now...just tell the hire company you need one below that weight...
Just rang the hire company mate, can definitely drive all their vehicles on a straight UK car license. Cheers for shitting me up though mate...
I just took my UK license with me. Didn't hire a car till we got to Airlie Beach, I just showed them my license and that was good enough for the hire company. Drove up to Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation then back to Cairns. Hardly owt on the road and they drive on the same side of the road as us anyway so its a piss-ball. I'd recommend Port Douglas and Daintree Rain-Forest if you're up North Queensland way, superb with the Great Barrier reef a major attraction.
