I hated French back when I was at school. I never bothered to learn more than bonjour. But I'd like to learn language now. Anybody else learning one?

yeh I remember from school there was load of feminine masculine *****, couldn't be arsed with it. I'm fancying learning Spanish, Italian or Greek.

No scouse doesn't count. I think I'm semi fluent in scouse dialect. :)

Been trying Spanish for a few years but

Still in plastacine and sand class . The younger you are the easier it is. Daughter is in spain goes to free classes twice a week (for over 18mths) still has lots of problems... Grandson going to school has lessons 1/3 in english, 1/3 spanish and 1/3 in Catalan when you pick him up from school he is always speaking spanish with his mates ( various nationalities) his best mates are swiss, spanish and 2 lads from UK . He is 11 been there just about 18 months and now has no problems. As far as languages at school I recon this country is bottom of the class

    Yes!

Aye, through neccessity rather than choice as no fecker here speaks English! Felt really resentful at first as expected it to be like Amsterdam or Stockholm, but now am really glad that English isn't that widely spoken as after five years I'm really fluent which opens up so many aspects of the country (such as listening to what people in the street are gassing about etc etc!) The thing is though, Russian is so hard that I reckon learning it without living here would be pretty damn near impossible. My dad is learning Italian at the minute and I looked at one of his books and it looked an absolute piece of piss when comparing it with Russian - so I'd say that's a good one to start with. You'll know loads of the vocab already and it's pretty useful if you're planning on going there as apparently English is not widely spoken outside the big cities.

really? It is very good then? I might get it. How much did it cost? I've been told that if you learn Italian or Spanish it is easy to learn the other because they are very similar.

    Greek

Nighmarish, really not recommended if you've not learned another language previously. Riddled with irregularities, especially with the spelling which is even more random than English, and the vocabulary is spectacularly huge - unsurprisingly for one of the most ancient languages on the planet!

    RE: Yes!

thanks for your advice. I will forget Greek. So its Spanish or Italian.

I did go a couple of Spanish classes earlier this year because I was going to start then. But then I couldn't go anymore because of work. But it seemed a lot better than French at school. Its a lot better when you want to learn. But basically I have no language skills, I sat the exam at school because you had to. I think I got an E. How anybody could do any worse I have no idea.

Me and our lass did a 12 week course in Spanish about 18 months ago. It wasn't too difficult to pick up. Only problem is if you are not living in that country you just don't get to practice and forget it. I reckon I would need to go on a course again to make any conversation. Found it easier to read than speak as you are not recalling the words when reading, you just have to recognise what is front of you.

    RE: Yes!

My best mate got a U in GCSE French, but moved to Spain and was fluent in 6 months. Anyways, good luck in whichever one you choose. I'm currently wanting another one to learn after Russian, Italian is definitely the one I'm fancying the most at the minute. Off to Italy this summer and know that I'll feel like a complete lemon only knowing food and drink words. Though I suppose in Italy that should be pretty sufficient!

    RE: Yes!

hahaha yeh I went to Italy a few years ago when I was back packing. It became more dificult further south in the country as less people spoke English, but luckily a fella I was with spoke a bit of Italian and spoke Spanish.

When I was in Prague some Italians were teaching me some Italian but I think it was rude and I've forgotton it anyhow

Right I'm starting to think Italian too. :D

    Ciao

You could try the michel thomas courses. All via cd no books needed, so you can just stick it on in the car and try to pick some bits up. And apparently a full bundle (french, german, italian, russian + more) is available as a torrent. Not that I would condone that type of thing :)
