Thinking of changing the telly and was going for an LCD one, but some plasma sets are cheaper than LCD, which I find surprising, particularly Panasonic, where prices seem to have dropped considerably.
What's the advantages / disadvantages of plasma over lcd please. Comments and opinionsgratefully received.
Oh, and any recommendations for 37" at under £600?

Ive not got either But plasma deals better with motion blur and fast moving images and is better on larger screen TVs, LCD works better on small screen. If you ever watch the gadget show they always give away a large screen plasma and a small screen LCD.
RE: Anybody got a plasma TV ? Yes. Panasonic 42 inch Prefer plasma to LCD. No motion blur when watching sport, plus a much wider viewing angle. Go to www.richersounds.com. They have Panasonic TXP37X1O @ £489, or the TXP37C10 @ £549. Go to John Lewis for a price match + free 5 year guarantee as I did.
RE: Anybody got a plasma TV ? Yes. Panasonic 42 inch The Panasonic TXP37X1O is the one I am interested in.
Currys and Argos are on at £549 and Amazon at £529. Not keen on mail order for this type of thing. It's so much easier to drag back to places like Currys or Argos if not happy. Will check out other sources you mentioned though.

RE: Anybody got a plasma TV ? Yes. Panasonic 42 inch Use John Lewis as I did. OK, I used Oxford Street but I see they've got a branch in Sheffield. Ask them to match the £489 of Richer Sounds for the model you want. They will match it AND you have their free 5 year guarantee. Plus you save £60 or so on the Currys price where you'd have just a 12 month guarantee.
Top advice.. Richersounds always worth a look. John Lewis ... outstanding customer service. I went for a LCD Sharp Aquos 42'' a few years ago. John Lewis price matched. Ordered Monday arrived Thursday and in between they had dropped the price by £100...........they simply gave me a £100 refund !! As for the Plasma LCD debate........its up to you and the setting its in and how much time you are prepared to set it up. To be honest I plugged in and away we went. No problems at all on sport or films.
Get yerself a whopping 50in Panasonic plasma. Fantastic picture. Agree with the Richer Sounds/John Lewis comments as well.
I understood that plasmas are a lot heavier and fragile so not as easy to move and setup. A lot of places recommend professional mounting and setup for plasmas for this reason but then they would wouldn't they. No idea in reality because I went the LCD route. Either is probably okay because the defining factor for picture quality seems to be the digital encoding of the telly signal. Some channels are shocking.
Just bought an LCD as my Plasma broke... I had a Panasonic Viera PLASMA and was well happy with it, now got Samsung LCD and its awesome! got Sky HD running through it - feckin quality. Plasma's are cheaper but IMO LCD is a better picture.
I think that was just early plasma's mate Apparently early plasma's suffered from screen burn, where say, a channel logo would be left on the screen if viewed for too long. Since then though, the manufactuers have added built in screen burn protection. The technology in them improved so they ended up being extremely reliable tv's which benefit from wide angle viewing (shadow free) and no pixelating when watching sports. I have had my Samsung 42" plasma for nearly 3 years now and not once had a problem (touch wood). I would certainly recommend plasma but obviously can't comment on lcd. A few year ago I was advised that anything above 37" it was better to get plasma to stop the pixelating. However, I believe on newer lcd's this is no longer so much of a problem. I would say now that technology has moved on their isn't much between the two. PAOLO
Higher frequency (i.e 100Hz and above) LCD don't 'ghost' Agree about the visible angle. But plasma TVs are juice guzzlers in comparison; about double the energy consumption.
check out avforums.com I found this site very helpful for independent reviews and opinion. I posted some questions and received some good advice. My recommendation is to audition plasma and lcd tvs and then make your choice - you will watch the most after all. Fwiw, I have had a 43" pioneer plasma since 2004. Excellent picture quality and no technical problems. Bon chance!
