Management costs push Tykes into the red Barnsley FC have plunged to a loss after incurring the "considerable cost" of changing management staff in a bid to improve their onfield performance. For the year ended 31 May 2014 Barnsley Football Club (2002) Ltd reported a pre-tax loss of £2.1m compared to a profit of £1.9m for the same period the year before. Turnover did, however, increase slightly from £9.13m to £9.37m. The accounts represent what was a difficult season for the club as it was relegated from the Football League Championship into League One. David Flitcroft was sacked as manager in November 2013 after less than a year in charge with the club bottom of the league and was replaced by Danny Wilson. Later in the season, first team staff Micky Mellon and Ian Willcock were both replaced by Chris Hutchings and Mark Crossley. Writing in the financial results, chairman Maurice Watkins said the cost of changing the football management staff "was considerable". The annual wage bill at the club also increased from £7.7m to £8.7m in a move which Watkins said was to "ensure Championship survival" and build upon the achievements of David Flitcroft during the second half of the previous season. The club also paid "significant fees" to sign both Dale Jennings and Chris O'Grady. Distributions from the Football League amount to the "highest form of turnover" for the club which has a significant impact on spending, including the amount available for player salaries and transfer fees. Despite Watkins saying in the report that the wages and salaries relating to footballing activities "reflect the calibre of talent registered with the club in order to compete in the Football League Championship", Barnsley currently sit in 16th place in League One, three points above the relegation zone. Watkins added that the effect of relegation from League One to League Two would be a "significant fall in turnover from all income streams with league distributions, season tickets and gate receipts being most affected". Also, Watkins said that budgets and projections indicate that revenue generated from footballing activities – season ticket sales, gate receipts, league distributions, prize money and TV – are "insufficient to cover" the club's expected costs. The club is "financially dependent and will continue to be dependent upon" the support provided by its beneficial owner Patrick Cryne

"The annual wage bill at the club also increased from £7.7m to £8.7m in a move which Watkins said was to "ensure Championship survival"" Err - didn't someone ought to tell him?
Be five years before the fall out of our ladt season in the championships cleared up. Long bumpy road. Hope the board have purchased a new turd polishing cloth cos theyll need it.
They are, director's salaries not stated. Wonder how much the Chief Exec gets ? Some kind soul also 'donated' £840k to BFC.
That's why I asked about CE salary. Assume Mr Watkins isn't taking a salary as well ? You seen the accounts Dave ?
