http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw043091 I know its Wood Brothers Glass works but I cannot get any bearings on where it is in relation to now. Just cant find a landmark thats still there to get some idea.
So is the building on the right, just before the canal where that light shop would be on Ponte Rd now? Can't get my bearings on where the canal used to be in relation to now. Fascinating stuff isn't it, amazed at how much has changed/gone!
Building at middle right is Lite Spot(?) next to Pontefract Road which ran right up against Woods. Foreground is old brewery site. Almost exact centre of pic will be Elm Row(?) where snooker club is. Railway Viaduct in distance crossed where the trail crosses now, towards Mill O' Black Monks. Old line from Barnsley to Cudworth.
barnsley main pit stack behind the canal. if that plane is travelling in the direction of the picture its probably just flew over oakwell. according to a book i've got that aqueduct was demolished in 1954.
why they filled in that canal beggers belief... can u imagine it nowadays, full of pubs and resturaunts down hoyle mill.. bit like they have in wakefield and huddersfield
2/3rd up on the left looks like Lord Street follow this along and Ash Row steps back from Pontefract Road, love to see old photo's of the tarn and how things change
Where the canal goes under the road is that now where the speed camera is? does can't picture where the viaduct goes across, somewhere past the priory roundabout? its doesn't look far enough on to be the old railway crossing just before Stairfoot roundabout.
When you come darn from Cundy Cross roundabout you used to go under the viaduct, to the right of it on the picture, where the roads turns right before getting to where car park across from pub/Indian is.
