My PC at home, on to which I've just installed BT Broadband, keeps freezing and crashing. When I Ctrl, Alt, Dlt it brings up the box with the applications running and has a list of about 6 or 7 that say 'WUAULT'

The BT Broadband won't launch from the desktop, in fact no applications will. Any ideas anyone ?

Did you have firewall and virus checker on before launching the BT Broadband? n/t

Have you reinstalled your operating system (i.e. Windows xp) at all. You should only have 1 instance of WUAULT or WUAUCLT running. It is an automatic windows update programme.
Press Alt/Com/Del at the same time to bring your task manager up. If you click on the performance tab, and it is showing at 100% (or close), something is hogging your memory and it will probably freeze. Click back on the Processes tab, and the numbers under the CPU show exactly what is using the memory. If between them the WUAULT are showing 50+ then yes, that is your problem.

    Oh dear

You said the dreaded word - Norton.

Guaranteed to screw up your machine.

God knows how they are still allowed to sell their products.

And is your version of XP legit or 5-fingered discount?

Cos I've heard of a number of people with ~cough~ evaluation copies of XP having severe grief after updating. They bought a legit. copy installed over the pirate and hey presto, no more problems.

You need to right click on a desktop item, click on properties, and under the shortcut tab it will tell you the application the icon is targetting. If there's nothing in the target box, or the target destination has been altered, then there is something on your computer that is altering things. These are usually viruses. However, like someone has already mentioned, if you are using an illegal copy of say windows xp, then you are going to get problems when updating because Microsoft are spending millions of dollars on tackling illegal software, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are files included in Microsoft updates that compromise unauthenticated operating systems.
Without looking at your comp, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly the problem, but if you are unhappy and its causing grief, then I would suggest backing up the stuff you want on a memory stick, and then do a complete format of your c: drive. If you do though, make sure you know how to reinstall windows.
