    That is absolutely shocking and i hope Taxi drivers in Barnsley stage a protest, City councils already rip people off as it stands but to increase it by that percentage is a utter disgrace in a time of hard ship when people are losing jokes therefore folk will hardly be wanting a Taxi to go out.

    I hope it does put a few out of business

    Some of the so called taxis in barnsley are nothing short of death traps driven by people that I find it hard to believe hold a drivers licence and certainly aren't aware of a little thing called the highway code.

    The council should be imposing tighter regulations on the taxi industry that will get rid of the cowboys and leave the professionals that take pride in their job.

    they've put it up by less than 100 quid

    for 12 months so it's gone up about what 8 quid a month? When you consider that this is apparently 200+% what it was last year you really have to ask how much the licence to run a taxi was before. was it about £3 a month or something? Hardly breaking the bank.

    Yeah but look at it from the annual figure, didn't you say an extra 94 quid so what is the total figure? in Sheffield i paid £140 quid for 18 months, and thats Sheffield... a much bigger place then Barnsley, i think they are f'king cheeky tbh.

    Was about 42 quid a year for a licence and now gone up to about £135. Or to put it another way its gone from £3.50 a month to just over £11 a month. About 37p a day.

    It was over £50 cheaper to licence a taxi in barnsley last year than it was in doncaster. £150 less than sheff according to each areas council/gov website.

    Agree 100%. Some of them should consider going back and doing basic lessons in road etiquette and basic highway code. Collectively they have to be the worst drivers on the road.

    They can easily make up the difference with all the loose change and mobile phones they find down the back of their seats.

    At first I thought - yes.

    </p>

    But then you see it works out at &pound;2 a week.</p>

    They complain a lot that the council are issuing too many licences and there are therefore too many cars competing for a dwindling market. The council statement (link in Eaststander's post) points out that the enforcement of regulations on sub-standard and illegal vehicles is met by the licence fee on a cost-neutral basis, so basically the council are askingthem to pay&pound;2 each (and I believe that's each car, not each driver, most cars have more than one driver) so they can get the cowboys off the road and free-up some much needed extra custom for the good guys. </p>

    Looks like a no-brainer to me.</p>

    Death traps? what do you base that info on? Taxis have to have several strict mot's a year. I doubt they would allow a "death trap" on the road.
