Have a gander online for how to guides. There's nothing too vexing about bike servicing and repair. You'll be surprised how much you can get done. There are a few potential jackass manoeuvres you can do with the headset (tightening the wrong thing) but so long as you read up about it, you'll not make the mistakes. The only sticking points will be if you need specialist tools like crank pullers, cassette tools and bottom bracket tools. That's when you end up spending as much as a service, unless you can borrow them of course. But the chances are you'll not need these tools anyway.
