We were there 10 days ago.

Wouldn't say we absolutely loved the place, it's certainly nice though, and I'm sure you will enjoy.

We stayed on the Buda side of the river where living is a bit cheaper, but Pest is where the main shopping and business centre is.

Basically you need to see the Castle (and its general area, including the Fishermans Bastion), Heroes Square, the main shopping street (the name of which I forget, but it runs from the back of the Intercontinental Hotel to the big market hall) the market hall itself, Heroes Square, The House of Terror (Communist & Fascist HQ/torture and execution building) and take a cruise on the Danube. Well that's what we did, and I can't recommend things we didn't do!

There's plenty to see in a weekend, wouldn't want to stay for longer.

Tip 1 - from the airport ask at the Tourist Information if you can book the shuttle into the city - it's a shared minibus that takes you to your hotel for about £6 each, one way (return ticket available). Taxis are notorious for overcharging tourists - even the ones outside the airport.

Tip 2 - The Red 'City Circle Sightseeing' tour is decent value and a good way to get about - 24 hour ticket is about £14 each. Now running to Winter timetable I think, which means buses run every two hours instead of every half hour I think (check). Departs from office at back of Intercontinental Hotel.

    Enjoy!!

Budapest is my favourite European city

So beautiful and yet such excellent value for money. It's everything that London should be. You could check out the posh baths and go up to the citadel where that statue is on the hill where you'll get a great view of the city. The many kinai buffe Chinese outlets offer grub for a crackingly low price (why choose when you can have they whole menu for a couple of quid?). There's a little coffee shop full of eye-candy that does excellent pancakes and is cheap as chips right across the Danube from the beautiful parliament building. Maybe a day wine tasting (binge drinking) in the wine cellars up in the old village by the castle. I agree the market place is an excellent place to go. Eating out in Budapest is an excellent value-for-money experience, especially if you like meat and piles of it. The chain bridge and parliament building look marvellous at night. Top place.

    cheers all..

not so sure about Budmustang's 'eye candy' suggestion though seeing as I'd probably have to keep an eye on the boyfriend for that one... :)

but I'm sure we'll have a great time, thanks for the suggestions and I'll see if I can remember anything to write on the bbs when I get back on Monday... hehe....
