Yes went to Christmas markets last year and stayed in puro hotel in old town. Cracking little town, very cheap and locals can't do enough for you. Take some warm clothes though cos it's bloody cold!!

Carried out survey of the harbour in the 60s during the Soviet era. Rented a large mansion for peanuts, and hardly spent my living allowance let alone salary. I told the landlord of the pub I used, and he and a mate went off for a supposed fortnights holiday, armed with jeans and gramophone records. They reappeared 10 weeks later having sold the lot including spare shirts and the suitcase. His wife never spoke to me again.

Great little town. Perfect for a long weekend, lots of things to see and do. Loads of pubs and restaurants. Take the climb to the top of the church in the main square (Bazylika Mariacka)! If you get bored there is always Sopot you can travel to.

If you have the time, and maybe a hire car, drive north to Wladyslowowo (pronounced Vladyslov-ovo) which is a very nice seaside town and maybe travel down the Hel peninsula from there. It's around 60 miles from Gdansk to the tip of Hel but you will then be able to tell your friends that you've been to Hell and Back :)

We were there in the summer - the Baltic is much cleaner than the North Sea but you might find it a bit bracing in February.

The harbour and approaches floor to produce charts for the Dutch dredging company. We carried out both pre and post dredging surveys.
